Peer Rejection and the Maladaptive Social Behaviour of Children and Adolescents. Research indicates that peer rejection has serious negative effects on child and adolescent victims. However, little research has addressed the likelihood that peer rejection also has negative consequences for others in the social environment, through its instigation of maladaptive social behaviours such as bullying and ethnic prejudice. At present, the helping professions lack models of well-being that are sensitive to cultural diversity. This project will strengthen Australian social, family and community life for refugee and humanitarian entrants by addressing individual, family and community impacts of torture and trauma. The project's uniqueness arises from its specific emphasis on individual cultural sensitivity, using counselling methods consistent with a refugee world view.

Although increasing in number, children traveling on their own to seek protection abroad have received scant scholarly attention. No systematic research exists on the efficacy of asylum as a mechanism for protecting separated children smuggled or trafficked into Australia.
