Globalisation has resulted in changed management and ownership structures for ports with implications for labour relations, dockland redevelopment and relations with their social and economic hinterlands. These changes have social and environmental consequences, that are especially stark in the developing countries in the Asia-Pacific. While environmental issues have been thoroughly expolored, social transformations and impacts are poorly understood. We a suitable conceptual framework and methodology to anticipate, manage and assess the implication of change. This project seeks to conceptualise, compare and measure the social impact of changes to Asia-Pacific ports.Read moreRead less

Remote and Aboriginal students are culturally isolated in the distance education (DE) environment. With the critical need to increase numbers of registered nurses in isolated communities, Area Health and Aboriginal Health are collaborating with CSU to identify problems faced by nursing students under DE conditions. The study will use a critical theoretical approach to identifying resource (including social capital) deficits to this group. It will develop and evaluate a partnership model involving health services, university and local community. This partnership will construct a network of support to systematically address these deficits. This model would be transferable to all remote learning.Read moreRead less

This project is significant as much contemporary social policy is predicated on normative assumptions of 'community' 'trust' 'collective efficacy' 'social capital', which are contested, contextual concepts. Importantly there are differences in meaning and practice of 'community' between areas of advantage and disadvantage. In being based on these assumptions policy implementation, which increasingly relies on community capacity, infrastructure and human resources, may have the unintended outcome of exacerbating disadvantage. This project examines these contested concepts and explores Local Government's role in creating local partnership options and modes of governance to facilitate equitable outcomes for disadvantaged communitiesRead moreRead less
