    FitSkills: A Community-university Partnership To Increase Participation In Exercise Among Youth With Disability

    Summary
    Youth with disability have poorer health and are more socially isolated that their typically developing peers. Participation in exercise can improve their health and social connectedness. FitSkills is an evidence-based program that matches a young person with disability with a mentor and the pair exercise together at their local gymnasium. This research translation project will implement FitSkills as an on-going community-university partnership.

    Aerobic & resistance-based physical activity (PA) levels are alarmingly low in Australia. Council parks are ideal locations for community PA but these facilities are underutilised. There’s a need to partner with Councils to investigate strategies to promote aerobic & resistance-based PA in parks. Partnering with Councils we will evaluate eCoFit, a multi-component intervention involving installation of outdoor fitness equipment with a linked innovative smartphone App, education & social support.

    This project will assess the effects of adding improved park amenities to promote increased park use, sun protection behaviours, physical activity and mental well-being among park goers and residents in disadvantaged suburbs in Melbourne. The study involving the park improvements are conducted in partnership with the Brimbank City Council form 2013 to 2015. It will use a natural experiment study design where measures of health related-outcomes are assessed before and after modifying the park env .... Waiting lists with triage systems to allocate priority are commonly used to manage demand, but these systems often contribute to inefficiencies in service delivery.     The World Health Organisation states that the health impacts of toxic chemical exposure, including plastics, during early life are a modern research priority. Of potential concern, two plastic product sets – phthalates and phenols may be linked to adverse neurodevelopmental consequences. This project aims to provide greater clarity on exposure levels, determinants and health consequences of early life plastic exposure among modern Australian children and accelerate proactive policy responses.

    Pathways To Better Health And Education Outcomes For Tasmania’s Children

    For far too many of these children, a poor start predicts a poor future. This is especially true for Tasmanian children who live in amongst the most disadvantaged circumstances in Australia. This project will follow 12,000 Tasmanian children through early childhood services from birth to age five to find out if services are meeting their needs. The information will be used to improve services and improve the health and education of all Tasmanian children.

    Immediate treatment of people diagnosed with HIV infection has become a key public health intervention, based on recent evidence confirming treatment suppresses the virus to undetectable levels, and effectively eliminates the risk of transmission to sexual partners. Our partnership will identify and address barriers to accessing specialist HIV care and starting treatment among people recently diagnosed with HIV, and will contribute to Australia’s goal of ending HIV transmission by 2020.
