Alice Springs Hospital Readmission Prevention Project

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $124,608.00
    Summary
The Alice Springs Hospital Readmission Project is a collaboration between Alice Springs Hospital and the Baker IDI in Central Australia. Recurrent readmissions can lead to hospital overcrowding and remove a person from their community. The project will investigate whether a tailored discharge planning and case management approach for adult patients with complex chronic disease is beneficial in reducing recurrent readmissions to hospital and facilitating engagement with primary care services.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $68,779.00
    Summary
I will lead the development of the first set of population mental health indicators, spanning birth to young adulthood (0-24 years). I bring 15 years' experience as a leader in high quality government surveillance to this work. I will review evidence for key indicators and will test implementation of seven connected surveys in two rural Victorian communities. My research will address known evidence gaps in the fields of mental health and epidemiology, as well as support community-level responses

The Impact Of Maternal Nutrition And Depression On Infant Morbidity, Growth And Development In Vulnerable Populations.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $133,351.00
    Summary
Malarial infection in pregnant women can lead to serious consequences for the baby including death, low birth weight and bacterial infection. Babies born in the community are more likely to die than babies born in hospital, therefore improving basic medical care for babies at the community level should be an important priority. We aim to evaluate the causes of death and severe illness in newborn infants in Papua New Guinea, and to determine community based strategies to improve these outcomes.

Building A Suicide Prevention Campaign Targeted At Family Members And Friends Of Those At Risk Of Suicide

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $44,501.00
    Summary
This research consists of a series of four studies that aim to identify the most appropriate messages for a suicide prevention campaign aimed at family members and friends of a person at risk of suicide. This campaign would aim to increase the likelihood that those family members and friends would identify that person's risk and intervene in an appropriate way to keep them safe and encourage them to get the professional help they need.

    Funding Amount
    $107,204.00
    Summary
This PhD project will identify the key mechanisms for successful scale-up and sustainability of a community based diabetes prevention program - the Kerala Diabetes Prevention Program (NHMRC Project ID 1005324). Based in India where diabetes is becoming increasingly common, these findings have global relevance. Findings will add to crucial evidence gaps in how to systematically scale-up effective prevention programs in order to maximise public health impact.

Meaningful Engagement Of Adolescents In Health Programming And Evaluation

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $128,224.00
    Summary
Adolescence is a critical developmental period of immense potential where health behaviours can be established that affect the lifecourse, and indeed the next generation. The Jharkhand Initiative for Adolescent Health trial set in rural India is exploring how meaningful engagement and participation of adolescents in their own peer-led community health intervention groups can lead to better health in marginalised adolescent girls, assisting us to better help vulnerable adolescents everywhere.

A Prospective Study Of The Aetiology, Associations, Clinical Features And Outcomes Of Community-acquired Pneumonia In Children And Adults In Tropical Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $106,937.00
    Summary
Pneumonia is common in Australia and often requires hospital admission. The germs that cause pneumonia in tropical Australia are less well known than southern Australia and likely to be different. This study will identify which germs cause pneumonia in people in tropical Australia and will identify which people become more unwell. I aim to identify the best antibiotics to use, the differences between children and adults, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and people living in different areas.

An Exploration Of The Nature And Meaning Of Informal Communities In Cancer Treatment

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $92,745.00
    Summary
The interactions that occur in cancer treatment with other patients, family members and staff are often unavoidable. Recent research examining patient's interactions has demonstrated the importance of these communications, as social support, a forum to exchange information and ideas, and a gathering of people facing the same challenges. This study aims to examine the role of these interactions between patients, staff and family members to explore the purposes and effects of these interactions.
