Summary
Parental rejection of vaccines is a global concern that threatens to undermine disease control. A lack of evidence hampers the responses to this complex and persistent problem. We will interview parents who don’t vaccinate their children to learn what influences their decisions. We will then hold community juries and a public engagement process to refine strategies for responding to vaccination rejection that are acceptable to a well informed citizenry, practical and ethically justified.

Summary
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) affects many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Early detection using an ultrasound of the heart (called an “echo”) can help children access treatment. Echo screening in remote communities needs active community participation and leadership in order to succeed. I will study new approaches to community-led echo screening to see if they are accurate enough, evaluate the impact of community involvement and describe outcomes for those diagnosed with RHD.

Youth with disability have poorer health and are more socially isolated that their typically developing peers. Participation in exercise can improve their health and social connectedness. FitSkills is an evidence-based program that matches a young person with disability with a mentor and the pair exercise together at their local gymnasium. This research translation project will implement FitSkills as an on-going community-university partnership.

Summary
Stillbirth is a devastating outcome for women and their families yet behavioural interventions can reduce risk. Some interventions proven to work well are not always taken up especially by vulnerable or disadvantaged women. The benefits of other interventions are less well known but they have widespread community support. This project will explore community understanding of healthy behaviours and stillbirth risk reduction to ensure development of a culturally appropriate information resource.
Delivery of child health care to families outside hospitals is of increasing importance in Australia. In many poor countries it makes the difference between death and survival. Bringing in depth knowledge and capacity from working in disadvantaged communities in Australia, Africa and the UK, Dr Edmond will develop a timely action research agenda to understand the barriers to care outside hospitals and how to improve access, participation and child health outcomes in Western Australia

Aerobic & resistance-based physical activity (PA) levels are alarmingly low in Australia. Council parks are ideal locations for community PA but these facilities are underutilised. There’s a need to partner with Councils to investigate strategies to promote aerobic & resistance-based PA in parks. Partnering with Councils we will evaluate eCoFit, a multi-component intervention involving installation of outdoor fitness equipment with a linked innovative smartphone App, education & social support.
