Summary
We know little about barriers to the control of high blood pressure in rural regions of low income countries. These rural areas differ in the proportion of people with high blood pressure, the risk factors for high blood pressure and most likely the barriers to good treatment of blood pressure. We aim to find out what these barriers are, and develop and test a program that can be used to improve control of high blood pressure in very diverse settings.

The National Mental Health Survey (2000) found 1 in 7 children have externalising (aggression) and internalising (anxiety, depression) problems. Early mental health problems beget later problems with high costs to society, including clinical, remedial education and criminal justice services. Hence, early prevention is vital for national well-being and productivity. Delivery of child health care to families outside hospitals is of increasing importance in Australia. In many poor countries it makes the difference between death and survival. Summary
There is strong evidence elsewhere that involving community women in decision-making about strategies to improve the health of mothers and babies is a cheap and effective way of improving health. The WOMB study tests whether community women's groups improve the quality of maternal and child health care and outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the cost-effectiveness and how it works.
Model of care: A family focussed approach to promote child protection. Childhood neglect and abuse is an issue for all Australians. Models of best practice for child protection services are essential to protect the well-being of these children. This project will draw upon information from consumers and workers to provide a framework for a sustainable model of best practice for child protection that is transferable to other settings.
