Ageing and new media: A new analysis of older Australians' support networks. The aim of the project is to highlight the current and potential role new media can play in fostering the local, distant and virtual support networks of older Australians to radically update aged-care policy and service delivery. It plans to examine how older people’s support networks are increasingly dispersed due to the greater mobility of their family, friends and care services. The project plans to compare long-term settled, parent, and retirement migrants in both urban and regional locations, at home and in institutional care, across six groups: Australian, British, Italian, Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese. The project expects to deliver evidence-based recommendations to facilitate the use of new media to deliver innovation in aged care.Read moreRead less

The main aim of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art optical and electronic coatings facility for the Australian optoelectronics and nanotechnology research community to develop novel technologies of interest to communications, information technology and nanotechnology industries. The facility will allow the fabrication of a range of active and passive devices including photonic integrated circuits. The facility is flexible enough to allow the deposition of a range of dielectric and metal layers with different structural, optical and electrical characteristics of fundamental as well as applied interest. This facility may open up new opportunities to develop microcavities, nanocrystals, tunable lasers and detectors, novel cantilevers for atomic force microscopy.

. Technology has the potential to transform the means for scholarly collaboration and communication. Our proposal will achieve this potential, by deploying open source infrastructures to create new communication platforms. The Initiative will itself use collaborative writing systems to construct and energise the Network, which will match researchers requiring these new technologies with those who have the skills to build them. The outcomes will be an increase in the efficiency of traditional research collaborations as well as new kinds of collaboration and communication, for researchers and consumers of research across a range of disciplines.Read moreRead less
Effective clinical handover communication: improving patient safety, experiences and outcomes. Communication in clinical handover (transfer of responsibility for patient care) plays a causal role in many adverse events. This project will contribute new knowledge for improvements in handover communication which will be shared across hospitals and health departments nationally to improve patient safety and reduce healthcare costs.

FlashLite: a high performance machine for data intensive science: The 21st century has been described as the century of data. Experts predict an exponential growth in the amount of data that will be captured, generated and archived. Australia has made significant progress towards addressing some of the opportunities and infrastructure challenges posed by such rapid increase in data volumes. However, these investments do not address the growing need to process data. Conventional supercomputers are unable to meet the challenges of the data explosion. The large gap in latency and bandwidth between the processor, memory and disk subsystems means that the processor is often idle waiting to fetch data. This project will build a platform focussed on data intensive science.Read moreRead less
Towards improved communication for medication safety: addressing the complexities of managing medications in hospitalised children. This study considers how health professionals, children and family members communicate about the management of medications in hospital. Comprehensive insights into the complexities involving communication processes will inform policies and programs directed at promoting and maintaining optimal management of medications in hospitalised children.
Electronically controlled phased array antenna for universal Ultra-High-Frequency (UHF) Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) applications. RFID may potentially replace barcodes allowing automated identification of individual items at multiple points in supply and distribution chains. A smart antenna engineered RFID reader improves efficacy in a host of applications such as logistics and security surveillance and tremendously benefits Australian economy as a key player in the field.
Evaluating communication for development: supporting adaptive and accountable development. Australia spends $5.2 billion a year on overseas aid and is increasingly interested in the role of communication in sustainable development. This project will help to create a more effective means of understanding the impact of communication for development and improving its effectiveness in contributing to sustained, positive development outcomes.
Millimeter Wave Frequencies for Vehicle-to-Everything Communications. High data rate communication links between vehicles and surrounding objects are needed to enhance advanced driver assistance systems, enable a wider range of infotainment options and pave the way towards fully automated driving. High data rate communication links between vehicles and surrounding objects are needed to enhance advanced driver assistance systems, enable a wider range of infotainment options and pave the way towards fully automated driving. This project aims to develop a novel framework to use millimeter wave frequencies (the newest candidate for 5G cellular) to enable future high data rate vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication systems. Based on an innovative approach, the project combines communication and sensor technologies in an integrated system that simultaneously reaps the benefits of autonomously sensing the driving environment and cooperatively exchanging information, thus providing significant savings in hardware costs and spectrum usage.Read moreRead less
