It compares refugee settlement in three rural/regional areas in Tasmania through the lens of police-refugee relations. In particular, it will identify ways in which community policing can enhance settlement experiences and reduce crime among refugees in regional Australia. There are growing trade, diplomatic and security relations between Australia and the Philippines. Both nations have English as a common language, comparable educational systems, and respective elective affinities with the US. Across the Pacific first world nations, modern Filipino diasporas are utilising dynamic forms of knowledge and business practice and as a result are developi ....Filipino-Australians: Networks, Identities, Communities. The Circulation of Nonviolence: Gandhi and the History of Global Politics. Global protest movements have become a feature of recent campaigns against war and corporate power. The diffusion of protest across national boundaries disrupts official routine, threatens state power, and raises new questions about global citizenship. However, the history, dynamics and novelty of transnational diffusion is still only dimly understood. This project will address such absences. The rapidity of the process has left many changes unexplored and under analysed. The project will comprise a three-year ethnographic study to uncover the ways in which people think about time, about electronic networks, and by what means these influence how they make sense of their lives, their work, and their relationships in a fas ....Time out of mind? The challenge of managing cultural diversity in education: the case of Arab-Australian youth. This project investigates the challenges posed by cultural diversity in multicultural schools. It will focus specifically on students from Arabic-speaking background (ASB) attending secondary schools in the Northern and Western regions of Melbourne. The study will assess whether individual students' attitudes and the schools' structures and pedagogical ideology impact upon ASB students' achievements. ....The challenge of managing cultural diversity in education: the case of Arab-Australian youth. The invisible parents project - exploring the barriers to effective parental and community involvement in three Northern Territory Schools. Education outcomes in the Northern Territory, particularly for Indigenous students, lag far behind those of other Australians, to the point that the situation can be considered a national emergency. This research program will explore ways to improve parental involvement.
