Soft Infrastructure, New Media and Creative Clusters: Developing Capacity in China and Australia. The project will position Australia at the forefront of the creative industries internationally and enhance national capacities in the rejuvenation and design of creative urban precincts. A greater appreciation of, and strong links with China, particularly its design and urban sectors, will result. Australian firms will benefit through greater trade opportunities as a result.
The uses of romance for new demographics and multimedia platforms: A model of media innovation in international women's fiction publishing. The national benefit of this project is both economic and socio-cultural. Economically, it investigates new ways to produce and distribute Australian creative content for local and export markets. The national benefit of this project is both economic and socio-cultural. Economically, it investigates new ways to produce and distribute Australian creative content for local and export markets. It identifies how branch offices of global firms can be creative offices. Culturally, it develops scenarios for maximizing the acceptance, uptake and use of digital technologies by both large-scale publishers and young Australians. It investigates agents along the length of the creative value chain - from authors to audiences - to determine the uses of creative fiction, identifying the features that attract / repel users of published fiction in these genres. Finally it extends the capabilities of users to create their own romance content.Read moreRead less
Empire and Antipodes: Australian-New Zealand involvement in the Empire/Commonwealth Press Union (1909-1970). This project will investigate the role and changing significance of the Empire/Commonwealth Press Union (1909-1970) focussing on its regular international conferences and the communication issues raised by the Australian-New Zealand delegations which attended. Drawing on the work of Harold Innis on the history of communication across empires and using the E./C.P.U as a case study, the pr ....Empire and Antipodes: Australian-New Zealand involvement in the Empire/Commonwealth Press Union (1909-1970). This project will investigate the role and changing significance of the Empire/Commonwealth Press Union (1909-1970) focussing on its regular international conferences and the communication issues raised by the Australian-New Zealand delegations which attended. Drawing on the work of Harold Innis on the history of communication across empires and using the E./C.P.U as a case study, the project seeks to investigate the ascendancy and decline of British imperial communications in terms of old/new media and British/antipodean communications. Key debates and concerns of the A/NZ press delegations, including press freedom, cable technology and the advent of broadcast media, will be examined within the shifting contexts of private/public monopoly and imperial/national loyalty with reference to parallel developments in India.Read moreRead less
Australian information seekers and the social consequences of information poverty. This project aims to advance considerably our understanding of information seeking, and its social, cultural and civic implications for Australia. It will produce useful findings for researchers and policy makers interested in the economic and social consequences of information poverty, and will also contribute to the strategic planning of the public library sector.
The Monitored Audience: Control of Personal Information in the Digital Era. In an era when the internet can gather detailed information about citizens and mobile phones can target ads to them based on their location, consumers need a say in the policies and practices governing the use of their personal information. In an era when the internet can gather detailed information about citizens and mobile phones can target ads to them based on their location, consumers need a say in the policies and practices governing the use of their personal information. Research indicates Australians are concerned about the collection and use of their information. This project would explore what they are doing about it and what information handling policies and practices they support. The findings will provide a citizen perspective on deliberations over information and data handling policy as well as on ethical and legal debates about commercial monitoring at a time when the technology for capturing personal information continues to develop at a rapid pace.Read moreRead less

The primary aims of this research are to develop representation, presentation and interaction models for the delivery of geospatial information using WAP-enabled cellular phone and mobile Internet technology and to implement these for the purposes of Australian fleet drivers. Research and testing relating to small-screen delivery of geospatial information is necessary to ensure that future products and services are usable and satisfy user needs. Expected outcomes include a greater understanding of the requirements of the Australian market, new models that will contribute to the evolution of the geospatial mobile Internet industry and a functional prototype with the potential for commercialisation.Read moreRead less
Design of Secure Electronic Voting Systems. It is inevitable that electronic voting will eventually replace current paper based voting schemes. The main outcome of the research will be the fundamental knowledge required to develop secure electronic voting schemes. The security aspects of the design will be thoroughly analysed to ensure that the integrity of the ballot is maintained without compromising user privacy. Evaluation of science communication activities in Australia. Public science communication activities such as talks, blogs, and social evenings are numerous and drawing larger audiences. But how do we measure their success? This project will collect existing evaluations and develop guidelines for science communication evaluation. The evaluation guidelines developed in this project will assist professional science communicators as well as researchers who wish to communicate the results of their scientific research, impacting a range of Australian audiences for science. This project aims to inform science communicators to create better science engagement activities, better ways of evaluating them, and, ultimately, audiences who are more engaged with the results of Australian scientific research. The project addresses the holy grail in the area of Reed-Solomon/BCH decoding, namely the derivation of algebraic soft-decision decoding algorithms. These codes are the most frequently used error-correcting block codes and their performance does not fulfill its full potential due to the lack of algebraic soft-decision decoding methods. In the project the system-theoretic behavioural view is employed, which has proved itself successful in this area in recent years. The project aims to connect soft-decision decoding methods with the decoding of ring codes. Outcomes are decoding methods and algorithms for the australian telecommunications industry that enable increased error correction for Reed-Solomon/BCH codes and related ring codes.Read moreRead less
