A Consumer Bankruptcy Project - an interdisciplinary empiric inquiry into determinants and impacts of bankruptcy upon Australian debtors. The research will enhance the wellbeing of Australian society by obtaining a better understanding of the profile of bankrupt debtors, the reasons for personal default and the impact of the regulatory framework upon all stakeholders. It will draw parallels with US trends and apply an interdisciplinary empiric method to Australian personal insolvency data. Displacement-based assessment of the seismic resistance of unreinforced masonry buildings. Earthquakes have caused over $1,000 billion of damage and more than 100,000 deaths in the last decade. This devastation occurred mainly in unreinforced brick masonry (URM) buildings which constitute the bulk of the domestic building stock in low seismicity regions, including Australia. These buildings were designed to resist forces, not the displacements, caused by earthquake ground shaking. In doing so, we seek to reconceptualise the meaning of sovereignty, how that meaning has changed over time according to a variety of historical conditions, and the implications of this for traditional Westphalian conceptions during a time when state authority is increasingly challenged by an array of new actors. Furthermore, research tends to focus on ecological impacts and ignore social and cultural issues. 'The Independents' and Cultural Policy. This project will establish research partnerships between two cultural policy research centres at the University of Belfast and Nottingham Trent University, and Griffith University to develop; (1) best practice frameworks and analytical instruments for research on the independent micro-business sector of the creative industries in Australia and the UK, and (2) the evaluation of cultural policies designed to facilitate and cohere this sector.
Expand the capacity of an international multidisciplinary research network focussed on the ethical, legal and social implications of emerging biotechnologies. This project will ensure that Australia plays a central role in international debates and research activities aimed at regulating and facilitating advances in biotechnology. The project will also provide Australian researchers with direct access to key international experts in the field.
