A Consumer Bankruptcy Project - an interdisciplinary empiric inquiry into determinants and impacts of bankruptcy upon Australian debtors. The research will enhance the wellbeing of Australian society by obtaining a better understanding of the profile of bankrupt debtors, the reasons for personal default and the impact of the regulatory framework upon all stakeholders. It will draw parallels with US trends and apply an interdisciplinary empiric method to Australian personal insolvency data. The end of Westphalia? Re-envisioning Sovereignty. This initial project aims to undertake a systematic re-evaluation of state sovereignty. In doing so, we seek to reconceptualise the meaning of sovereignty, how that meaning has changed over time according to a variety of historical conditions, and the implications of this for traditional Westphalian conceptions during a time when state authority is increasingly challenged by an array of new actors. 'The Independents' and Cultural Policy. This project will establish research partnerships between two cultural policy research centres at the University of Belfast and Nottingham Trent University, and Griffith University to develop; (1) best practice frameworks and analytical instruments for research on the independent micro-business sector of the creative industries in Australia and the UK, and (2) the evaluation of cultural policies designed to facilitate and cohere this sector.
University of Queensland/Arizona State University partnership to design industrially suitable zeolite membranes for desalination. For desalination, the highest costs are organic-based membrane replacement (lasting ~1 year) and energy requirement. Functionalised zeolitic membranes are low-cost, high performing, chemically tolerant and thermally stable. The fossil record of galaxy formation. This Australian-led team recently used the Anglo-Australian Telescope to discover large numbers of a new type of very small galaxy in the centres of two galaxy clusters. This project will maintain Australian leadership in this new area of astrophysics research, whilst using the best international expertise and facilities.
