Survival from critical illness can be associated with a legacy of physical weakness, inability to think clearly and anxiety; patients can’t function as they once did. I am a physiotherapist focused on improving the outcomes of survivors of intensive care. I intend to develop a physical and cognitive activity programme that can be commenced early in the intensive care unit (ICU) admission aimed at improving the devastating effects that an ICU admissions can have on physical and mental function.

Summary
Little is known about the factors that predispose the development of chronic low back pain or what changes underpin effective treatment. Brain changes, thought to reflect adaptive processes are associated with chronic pain, but the extent of their contribution to CLBP is unknown. By measuring the adaptability of brain changes in people with CLBP I will determine if they differ from healthy controls in a way that predisposes them to develop chronic pain and is related to treatment response.

This research will identify dietary patterns that are associated with better cognitive function using data from individuals in Australia, the United States and Europe, and be used to guide dietary strategies to prevent or slow cognitive decline in at-risk individuals. Delaying or preventing the onset of dementia will save the Australian health care system billions of dollars.

The persistence of breathing problems from infancy to later life is a complication of premature birth with lifelong consequences. Breathing problems often occur together with lung disease, but prematurity can also affect heart and blood vessel development, and weakness of the main breathing muscle. We will find out how much the heart, lungs and diaphragm contribute to breathing problems in babies; helping us to better predict, diagnose and treat severe breathing problems in babies born preterm.

Sirtuins are histone deacetylases that have been reported to play a pivotal role in energy expenditure, mitochondrial function and pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and Alzheimer’s disease in particular. In this study, we will focus on the genes encoding sirtuin families, and examined the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms within genes encoding sirtuin families and functional markers for brain health.
