Cluster crossover and stepped wedge designs have emerged recently as study designs used in clinical and public health research settings. However, despite their use there has been very little methodological assessment of the statistical analysis methods used in current practice. The proposed research will assess the correctness of current methods and will produce a toolkit of state-of-the art, defensible trial design, analysis and reporting methods for the clinical/health researcher.

Biostatistics is the scientific discipline that focusses on the methods used to design and analyse research studies on human health. Doctors and other researchers conduct increasingly complex studies to identify best approaches for the prevention and treatment of disease, and these studies must be underpinned by sound biostatistical methods. This Centre will develop a critical mass of expertise in this under-resourced area around a program of methodological research, translation and training.
Dynamic social systems and adolescent alcohol/tobacco use: A new cusp catastrophe model. This research will substantially improve our understanding of the development of adolescent high-risk behaviours. It will directly inform multimodal prevention strategies by demonstrating how substance use, peer factors, and parent relationships unfold over time. This is much needed because most prevention strategies are too simplistic to address complex precursors to alcohol/tobacco use. Medical devices provide benefits but also have the potential to cause harm. Large amounts of data exist on medical devices after they have entered the market, but methods for analysing the data and rapidly detecting safety issues are lacking. The aim of the research is to improve the safety of implantable medical devices by using novel methods on existing data sources to develop an efficient and accurate post-market surveillance system.
