Listen to me, I really am sick! Understanding patient and family perspectives in triggering responses to medical emergencies. This project investigates whether patient and family perspectives are treated as evidence of a deteriorating health state whilst in hospital. Recommendations from this study will inform the development of patient centred strategies to reduce delays in clinician response to physiological deterioration and improve patient safety in hospitals.
Navigating an uncertain antimicrobial future: a sociological study. This project aims to develop a unique understanding of what governs antibiotic use in the health sector and how it can be governed more effectively. The project will critically assess the implementation of governance, and how regulatory and legislative environments may resonate or contrast with the demands of practice. This will support the development of strategies to improve antibiotic use and reduce resistance.

It will advance the existing knowledge base, both nationally and internationally, and establish comprehensive baseline data for further evaluative research. Important outcomes for each of the three sectors will be generated, as well as a comprehensive overview of this important new Australian social issue. Recommendations will inform the development of appropriate law and policy.

A project to examine and strengthen health care incident disclosure communication. Incidents occur frequently in health care, killing or maiming around 18,000 people per year. This study will map the experiences of patients and clinicians of conducting clinical incident discussions to enhance understanding of post-incident communication dynamics and develop models that facilitate incident communication.

Purchase of a Benchtop Triple Quadrupole Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer. This submission seeks funding to replace the existing 18 year old bench top gas chromatography/mass spectrometry instrument with a modern instrument, so providing the research community with a facility capable of meeting the increasingly more demanding analytical requirements of current research projects. Social futures and life pathways of young people in Queensland: waves 4 and 5 of a longitudinal study. This project assesses the impact of globalisation on the attitudes, behaviors, and life pathways of a cohort of over 7000 young Queenslanders, first surveyed when they were aged 12 and 13. Participants will be followed up when they are aged 19 and 20 and 20/21 to examine their experiences of the transition from school to work, family and social life.
