    Antarctic freshwater lake fauna: Palaeobiogeography, palaeoecology and applications to climate change studies. The origins of the Antarctic freshwater fauna are poorly known: Are the species currently extant long-term endemics descended from species present before the formation of the Antarctic ice-cap, or are they recent invaders from more temperate zones? By studying the distribution of faunal remains in the sediments of freshwater lakes, a picture of the development of the fauna in space and .... Antarctic freshwater lake fauna: Palaeobiogeography, palaeoecology and applications to climate change studies. The origins of the Antarctic freshwater fauna are poorly known: Are the species currently extant long-term endemics descended from species present before the formation of the Antarctic ice-cap, or are they recent invaders from more temperate zones? By studying the distribution of faunal remains in the sediments of freshwater lakes, a picture of the development of the fauna in space and time ('palaeobiogeography') will be formed that will allow the Antarctic fauna to be placed in a wider biogeographic context. Changes in the faunal distribution will also be interpreted in terms of lake palaeoecology and climate change.

    Winter temperature and salinity profile measurements in the Southern Ocean using elephant seals as ocean sampling platforms. As a result of the paucity of winter data in the Southern Ocean, sophisticated ocean models such as the GFDL MOM are hampered in their ability to properly represent the complex processes in the Antarctic sea ice zone. Elephant seals forage in the Southern Ocean throughout winter, and traverse the water column between 0 and 800 metres many times each day, providing an oppo .... The resulting data will contribute to oceanographic studies of water mass formation and frontal variability, including comparisons with historical data and assimilation into a complex ocean model.

The aim of this proposal is to accelerate research across a range of disciplines using high performance computing which is currently limited by the present available computing power. These disciplines include: mathematical modelling of magnetic resonance imaging, computational chemistry, engineering fluid dynamics, climate system modelling including atmosphere, ocean and ice sheet simulations. The Univers .... High performance computing for mathematics, chemistry, engineering and climate research. The aim of this proposal is to accelerate research across a range of disciplines using high performance computing which is currently limited by the present available computing power. These disciplines include: mathematical modelling of magnetic resonance imaging, computational chemistry, engineering fluid dynamics, climate system modelling including atmosphere, ocean and ice sheet simulations. The University of Tasmania, the Antarctic CRC and Australian Antarctic Division are combining resources to share in a joint facility of much greater capability. The proposed new high performance computing facility will increase in the computational power (over a weighted average of our benchmarks) by 13, an 8 fold increase in memory, and a 10 fold increase in disk storage. This new facility will allow these research groups to maintain their internationally leading edge status in high performance computing.

These observations will be used to evaluate operational numerical weather simulations specifically focusing on quantitative precipitation forecasts an .... This project aims to employ targeted field observations, numerical simulations and new satellite capabilities to identify the dynamical and microphysical mechanisms that enhance and redistribute precipitation across the alpine regions of south eastern Australia and Tasmania. These observations will be used to evaluate operational numerical weather simulations specifically focusing on quantitative precipitation forecasts and estimates. The observations will also be used to extend known biases in the national gridded precipitation analysis that are a result of the complex mountain terrain. This identification of the physical processes that enhance and redistribute precipitation over the alpine regions across south east Australia and Tasmania will lead to better precipitation estimates and forecasts and better water management.

    Precipitation in wintertime storms across southeast Australia, Tasmania and the Southern Ocean. The pristine conditions and strong wind-shear over the Southern Ocean affect the formation of precipitation in clouds over the region, which is vital to the water supply of southeastern Australia and Tasmania. This project will evaluate and improve the ability to simulate this precipitation, which will lead to better water resource management.
