Summary
Stunting is a neglected global health crisis. After the age of 2, irreversible health, developmental and economic consequences occur that are perpetuated across generations. Early risk prediction is key to more effective interventions. By determining the contribution of risk factors in pregnancy and early infancy, I propose to develop a tool that can be used by health workers to identify infants at high risk of stunting in early life, so that early preventive measures can be introduced.

Almost 25% of Aboriginal children in the NT are anaemic. Anaemia in childhood causes delays to cognitive development making it difficult to learn at school and has also recently been linked with chronic disease in adulthood. Anaemia is usually from a nutritionally deficient diet but can also be caused from parasitic infections or repeated diarrhoeal episodes. Better nutrition for women in and beyond pregnancy Both preterm birth and gestational diabetes can cause long term health problems for mothers and children. Healthier food choices by women may help to reduce babies being born too soon, and may also reduce the chances that women will develop type 2 diabetes later in life. However changing diet habits is not easy and so we need to find effective ways for women to make these changes, especially while they are pregnant.

Summary
Through pregnancy, the placenta transfers oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the baby. When a placenta doesn’t function properly a baby’s health is compromised. This can lead to morbidity or death. Creatine is the “back-up generator” of all cells and could help the failing placenta increase nutrient and oxygen delivery to the baby. This study will develop creatine as a potential new therapeutic, to improve the survival of babies of complicated pregnancies.
Studies of pregnant women are essential for determining new ways to improve the health of women and their infants. Information collected in these studies can answer many valuable questions, but only if used in the right way. This project will develop new statistical methods to make the most of information collected in these studies so that we can understand the true effects of a treatment and hence accurate health advice can be given to pregnant women.
