Summary
Physical inactivity and poor eating habits are leading causes of death and disease in Australia. Our health behaviours are influenced by our social networks. What’s more, Australians love social technologies, such as Facebook and smartphones. My research aims to harness these two factors to create socially-influential health programs. I will work with video game developers to develop fun and engaging interventions, and a viral marketer and leading organisations to spread the interventions.
Toward An Evidence-based Approach For Treating End-stage Knee Arthritis

Summary
World-wide more than one million total knee replacements (TKR) will be performed for end-stage knee osteoarthritis in 2016 alone. With an ageing population, demand for this procedure will increase dramatically, placing burden on a constrained health system. Up to 25% of TKR recipients experience on going pain after surgery and are dissatisfied with TKR. My research seeks to improve efficiencies and equitability of this important surgical procedure and in doing so optimise patient outcomes
Reducing Over Consumption Of Sugar-sweetened Beverages In Australia

Summary
Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is associated with excess energy intake, weight gain and obesity. High consumption also causes Type II diabetes, cardio vascular risk factors and tooth decay. Australians, especially young Australians, are high consumers of SSBs, and soft drinks in particular. Bringing experience from tobacco control, this research investigates public health policy mechanisms to reduce over consumption, with a focus on the potential of warning labels.

Both too much and too little sun exposure result in risks to health, but there are considerable uncertainties in our understanding of the detail, for both risks and benefits. This project focuses on key research gaps that need to be filled before a balanced sun exposure message, appropriate for Australians of different skin types and living in different locations, can be developed and disseminated.

Optimising Asthma Management In Pregnancy For Optimal Infant Health

Summary
Asthma affects 12% of pregnant women in Australia. These women are at increased risk of poor pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth and hospitalisation of the neonate. Reducing asthma attacks by providing optimal asthma management during pregnancy may lower these risks. This research will test whether a strategy which determines treatment changes based on a marker of airway inflammation, improves outcomes for maternal, neonatal and child health.

I lead Australasia's largest research group improving physical/mental health in families of children with cancer. With this CDF, I will broaden my work across child illnesses and internationally. I will introduce novel programs into the clinic/community, ensure technologies are delivered safely and improve health psychology research. I will increase collaboration across diseases and support emerging researchers. Evidence from this CDF will directly inform future child health services and policy.
