Summary
Cerebral palsy is an early brain injury that affects movement. Every year in Australia, this life long condition will be identified in another 600 infants. This Early Career Fellowship will train an Australian researcher to evaluate promising prevention strategies that could reduce the overall incidence of cerebral palsy for the first time. The researcher will also investigate other causes of cerebral palsy including birth defects that occur very early in pregnancy.

Summary
Cytomegalovirus is a herpesvirus that can be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy. Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) can cause damage to the developing central nervous system leading to long-term disabilities including cerebral palsy and hearing loss. This epidemiological research program seeks to investigate cCMV risk factors and burden, opportunities for early detection of neuro-developmental disabilities and to study the effects of postnatal antiviral therapies in this population.

Summary
Infants born preterm are at high risk of dying and survivors have a higher risk of neurological problems. Evidence suggests that giving magnesium sulphate to women at risk of preterm birth prior to delivery reduces cerebral palsy in surviving children. It is unclear which women may benefit, what dose and when prior to birth should magnesium sulphate be given. This review will determine how individual women should be treated with magnesium to help protect the brain of a baby born too soon.

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Australia, and is more common in the older age groups. Because the population most at risk of developing stroke is growing faster than the rest of the population, it is likely that there will be a large increase in the number of strokes occurring in coming years. At 1 year after stroke about one-third of patients have died, a third remain severely disabled and a third recover with minimal disability. In Australia, there is no information on outco ....Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Australia, and is more common in the older age groups. Because the population most at risk of developing stroke is growing faster than the rest of the population, it is likely that there will be a large increase in the number of strokes occurring in coming years. At 1 year after stroke about one-third of patients have died, a third remain severely disabled and a third recover with minimal disability. In Australia, there is no information on outcome beyond 5 years. It is thought that at 10 years after stroke about 70% of patients will have died, and a further 5-10% will have had another nonfatal stroke. The aim of this study is to assess the long-term outcome of patients with stroke. These will include measures of survival, stroke recurrence, and ability to perform usual daily activities. The use of health care and community resources and the associated costs of this will also be assessed. Information on survival patterns, stroke recurrence, disability and costs will be of great value for health service planning.
