The aim of this project is to understand the brain circuits controlling voluntary or goal-directed actions and particularly the memory processes that contribute to such actions. Goal-directed action is a fundamental capacity necessary for normal decision-making that is significantly attenuated by normal aging. This project aims to establish the neural circuits engaged in encoding new goal-directed actions, how this encoding is accomplished without interfering with pre-existing memories and how these memories are later retrieved to guide planning and performance. Understanding the determinants of such actions will enable the development of novel ways to treat ageing-related deficits in decision-making with significant economic benefits. Read moreRead less

Phenotyping doublecortin+ cells to unravel human adult neurogenesis. This project investigates one of the brain’s most remarkable phenomena: adult neurogenesis, the birth of new brain cells in a specialised brain area (the hippocampus) occurring well into adulthood. This process contributes to many species’ capacity to learn, remember and regenerate. However whether this process occurs in humans is heavily debated. Using new neuroscience tools, this project will produce new insights into human adult neurogenesis by deeply examining hippocampal cells that express the newborn cell marker, doublecortin. This will enable clarification of the existence and extent of adult neurogenesis in humans, and provide the foundation to leverage this process for improving learning, memory and brain regeneration in people.Read moreRead less
Charging transition metals with activating alkanes. The project aims to engineer positively charged metal complexes and use them to explore the chemistry of bound activated alkane ligands. The transformation of cheap, plentiful alkanes into more valuable products is a major quest in chemistry, and complexes of alkanes bound to metals are expected to play a key role in transformations of alkanes. The project intends to use the activated metal bound alkane to transform the normally inert alkane into compounds with desirable functional groups. This should make the synthesis of alkane complexes stable at room temperature in solution a realistic possibility. These cheap, plentiful alkanes can be turned into more valuable products, bringing benefits to industry.Read moreRead less
Alkane transformations through binding to metals. Alkanes are fully saturated hydrocarbons and they are the major components of petroleum, including natural gas and liquid hydrocarbon fuels. While hydrogen is set to play a leading role in global decarbonisation, significant challenges remain regarding methods for its reliable storage and transportation. Hydrogen liquefaction has emerged as a promising approach in this regard due to its high energy density and hydrogen purity, but is currently prohibitively expensive. In this project we will exploit the peculiar spin physics of hydrogen to alleviate liquefactions costs through the provision of controllable refrigeration (so-called 'cold energy') following regasification. In particular we will measure, optimise and exploit the highly endothermic catalysed conversion of para- to ortho- hydrogen, which can provide up to 525 kJ/kg of cooling at convenient temperatures.
