    Apoptosis And Stem Cells In Cancer Development And Therapy

    Summary
    To improve cancer therapy, we are studying two cancer hallmarks: enhanced cell survival and stem cell-like behaviour. As we discovered, cell death is often blocked in cancer cells. Hence, we are attempting to develop drugs that flip the natural ‘cell death switch’. Stem cells are rare cells that generate entire tissues, as we showed for the breast. Certain cancers may be driven by ‘rogue’ stem cells. If so, eradication of these rare cells within the bulk tumour may require novel therapies.

    The lymphocyte plays a vital role in our immune defence. When lymphocytes encounter a foreign invader, such as a virus, they make a series of decisions that influence the strength, type, and longevity of the immunity created. This program aims to understand how lymphocytes make decisions at the molecular level that affect cell and whole of system level behaviour. We aim to improve vaccines and understand diseases such as allergy, lupus, arthritis and leukaemia to develop novel therapies.

    Intervening In The Natural History Of Type 1 Diabetes: An Integrated Approach

    This Program brings together four of Australia’s top type 1 diabetes clinical and lab-based research teams. The program has three intersecting themes. The first theme, pathogenesis, focuses on early life and understanding why type 1 diabetes develops. The second theme, prevention, seeks to identifying new drugs to stop the disease from occurring. The third theme, treatment, aims to improve therapies to replace the cells that are destroyed during the disease process.

    Translating Membrane Proteins Into Therapeutics; From Bedside To Bench

    Membrane proteins are the principal gatekeepers for control of cellular response, with G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) the largest family of cell surface proteins. These proteins are critically important for pathophysiological control, and are a major target for drug discovery. Nonetheless drug attrition due to lack of clinical efficacy remains high. We are combining cell biology, clinical management and drug discovery science to enable more effective therapeutic translation.

    Lymphatic Biology In Human Disease

    This proposal is for a team of researchers and clinicians to explore the molecular control of the lymphatic vasculature. This network of lymphatic vessels, located in organs throughout the body, is critical for regulation of tissue fluid and immune function. It will identify new molecular pathways controlling lymphatic vessels and their interactions with other cells in the body and identify new diagnostic approaches and molecular targets for medicines to treat human diseases including cancer.
