Aurora Kinase: Molecular, Cellular And Functional Studies Deciphering Its Role In Stroke Injury

Summary
In stroke patients, oxygen deprivation indirectly induces massive nerve cell death by activating an enzyme called aurora kinase A (AURKA). We aim at unravelling (i) how AURKA is activated by oxygen deprivation, (ii) where the activated AURKA is localised in cells, and (iii) how the activated AURKA induces nerve cell death.The study will benefit development of therapeutic strategies to protect against brain damage in stroke since this is novel and different target for drug targeting.
New approaches for screening cereal germplasm for enhanced microbial pathogen resistance and desirable grain texture. The trait of grain hardness (texture) is of significance to the Australian infrastructure, as exports of hard wheat contribute over 5 billion dollars per year on average to the national economy and hard wheats are also important for domestic usage. Role of suppressor of cytokine signalling proteins (SOCS3) in defective muscle repair and ageing. Old muscles are slower and weaker than young muscles, they are injured more easily and they repair less successfully. This proposal investigates the role of SOCS3-signalling in muscle repair, ultimately to improve healing and to promote healthy ageing that will enable older Australians to enjoy a better quality of life.
Insect-inspired flapping wing robots: autonomous flight control systems. This project aims to design a novel control scheme for insect-inspired, flapping-wing, micro aerial vehicles. This type of micro aerial vehicle has complex, periodic, time-varying and inherently unstable dynamics, which are practically challenging to model and implement in hardware. The cytochrome P450 (Cyp) gene super-family is represented by over 90 sequences in the genome of the vinegar fly, Drosophila melanogaster. To date, four Cyp genes are found to be involved in insecticide resistance. The function of the majority of Cyp genes is unknown. Human-Robot Co-Evolution: Achieving the full potential of future workplaces. Physical human-robot systems are widely used to amplify the capability of human labourers and improve ergonomics in the workplace. This project aims to develop robot controllers that shape the co-evolution of these systems. Through physical human-robot interaction studies it will generate new knowledge of how humans adapt to working with robots, which will then be incorporated into the robot controller design.
