Towards a healthier food supply: achieving policy change and industry action. This research aims to identify mechanisms by which to improve the quality of the Australian food supply. The findings will have the potential to inform government and industry policies on healthier foods with the aim of decreasing chronic disease.
Identification of Australian-bred apple and plum varieties with enhanced health attributes. Improved prevention could save Australia $4 billion annually in health care costs, mainly in the area of cardiovascular disease. A higher flavonoid intake has been estimated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by about 20%. Apples are important sources of flavonoids in the diet. Improved prevention could save Australia $4 billion annually in health care costs, mainly in the area of cardiovascular disease. A higher flavonoid intake has been estimated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by about 20%. Apples are important sources of flavonoids in the diet. The proposed project involves collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia and the University of Western Australia. The aim is to identify progeny of both the apple and plum breeding programs that have elite levels of flavonoids and to demonstrate health benefits of a high-flavonoid apple. This could lead to significant benefits to Australian horticulture and to population health.Read moreRead less
Function and regulation of the Na+,K+-ATPase. The Na+,K+-ATPase is the major energy-consuming enzyme of animal cells. Its ion pumping is essential for numerous physiological functions (e.g. heart, kidney, brain). Molecular detail of its pumping mechanism is, however, lacking and its regulation is still unclear. We will use rapid reaction methods on purified enzyme in vitro to locate the rate-determining step of the enzyme cycle, determine its mechanism, investigate its regulation by sodium conce ....Function and regulation of the Na+,K+-ATPase. The Na+,K+-ATPase is the major energy-consuming enzyme of animal cells. Its ion pumping is essential for numerous physiological functions (e.g. heart, kidney, brain). Molecular detail of its pumping mechanism is, however, lacking and its regulation is still unclear. We will use rapid reaction methods on purified enzyme in vitro to locate the rate-determining step of the enzyme cycle, determine its mechanism, investigate its regulation by sodium concentration, phosphorylation and membrane composition, and isolate its charge-transporting steps. The results will have immediate impact on the understanding of the enzyme's mechanism, its metabolic control and its role in disease.Read moreRead less
Tomato and vegetable oil synergies for healthier foods. Vegetable and fruit products are recognised for their content of health-promoting phytonutrients. Vegetable and fruit products are recognised for their content of health-promoting phytonutrients. This project will investigate the bioavailability and subsequent in-vivo antioxidant activity of tomatoes and vegetable oils alone or in combination. A second aim will be to isolate particular phytonutrients from tomates and selected vegetable oils, and then to combine them for determination of synergistic interactions affecting antioxidant activity. Opportunities for the preparation of new phytonutrient-oil combination foods with increased antioxidant activity and the potential to enhance the health status of consumers will be developed. The research will provide food processors with expertise to develop novel plant-derived ingredients and food products for sale in the internationally growing functional foods market.Read moreRead less
Evaluation of peanuts as a source of bioactive nutrients for enhancement of endothelial function and cognitive performance. Functional foods represent one of the fastest growing food markets in the world, particularly foods which can offset adverse health conditions. The Partner Organisation, Peanut Company of Australia (PCA), is committed to developing peanut varieties, such as the high oleic peanut, that are nutritionally superior to the traditional varieties. By investing in research PCA aims to substantiate the nutritional benefits of these products and position itself in functional foods. Scientific evaluation of the health benefits that can be derived from consuming foods will enhance the national food industry through the growth of domestic and international licensing and export markets, and provide new employment opportunities in both rural and manufacturing sectors.Read moreRead less
