This project researches new ways of building on remote Indigenous homelands that contribute to culturally, environmentally and economically sustainable livelihoods on Country. This will be done by conducting the first construction and use analysis of a ‘Cultural Knowledge Centre’ in partnership with the Olkola People on their Cape York homeland. Combining participatory design and appropriate technology theories, expected project outcomes include enhanced understandings of how sustainable material technologies and self-building practices can be harnessed to deliver meaningful local economic outcomes. Significant research benefits include effective and economically sustainable ways building can support Indigenous peoples to live on Country.

Extending building information models (BIM) for specifications and cost planning. The recognition in the 1990's that inefficiencies in the design, construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure were costing up to 30 per cent of the total constructed cost of buildings led to a push for the more efficient use of information. The major change in the industry to date has been the introduction of Building Information Models (BIM). Uptake has now reached the tipping point where it is becoming pervasive. This project examines methods of adding value to existing BIM information which will allow the industry and clients to achieve a higher level of efficiency than can be gained just through substitution of BIM for current processes.

Modelling complex learning spaces. The growing use of digital tools and resources means that students' learning activities are no longer tied to unique physical places. Their work is distributed across increasingly complex mixtures of physical and digital spaces, which both shape and are shaped by students' activity. Modelling complex learning spaces. The growing use of digital tools and resources means that students' learning activities are no longer tied to unique physical places. Their work is distributed across increasingly complex mixtures of physical and digital spaces, which both shape and are shaped by students' activity. This project aims to identify productive ways of modelling the characteristics and uses of complex learning spaces in higher education. Evidence and models generated by the project aim to strengthen the logic connecting the use, management and design of learning spaces. A better understanding of the relations between pedagogy, activity and space will improve the work of architects and other designers, campus managers, university teachers and students themselves.

Co-Design Guide for Transforming Ageing Apartment Buildings. The project aims to unlock the redevelopment potential of ageing apartment housing by developing a co-design process to enable transformative redesign to become a mainstream redevelopment option in partnership with leaders in the emerging practices of transformative redesign. The outcomes will be a conceptual framework and practical guide to realise sustainable housing futures beyond demolition. This will benefit the Australian environment, economy and society by changing thinking around sustainable delivery of housing, creating new industries and services in the construction sector, and facilitating the effective transformation of old buildings into attractive spaces that add value for residents, neighbourhoods and cities.
