This project is concerned with developing intelligent technologies that support human interaction through handheld devices, connected to wireless digital networks. Intelligent software assistants running on these devices will interact with one another in order to coordinate the activities of multiple users. Such automated coordination may facilitate scheduling of meetings, collaboration among different members of a team, and negotiating conflicts that may arise between the activities of different connected users. This will enable context-dependent task support and coordination of workers involved in industrial applications involving mobility and dynamism.

Systems to Support Knowledge Creation in Learning Organisations. The proposed project will investigate the capacity of IT to support knowledge making for innovation in modern organisations. Prototypes of three flexible computer-based systems will be iteratively developed and evaluated for their support of knowledge workers in three different industries. The investigators are experienced in socio-technical approaches, which will be used to emphasise the integration between people and IT systems. An interpretive study will determine how the systems can contribute to organisational learning, performance, and responsiveness to change. The outcomes will inform the designers of such systems and show Australian organisations how to gain competitive advantage by expanding their capacity to learn.

This project will support Research Priority 3: Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries. The results will provide information that will further build our understanding of human computer interactions. Digital Foam supports Smart Information Use by providing a new interaction paradigm for existing and new creative applications for digital technologies. The new form of interaction provides a new computer interaction product in itself and the ability to make a more efficient creative environment for designers of 3D content, multi-media and manufacturing design. This technology supports the ability of organisations to operate virtually and collaborate across large distances in Australia and internationally.

Minimising the inappropriate and unnecessary hospital admissions of frail older people. The health system will continue to experience massive pressures in both fiscal and human resource terms. Older patients present with multiple, complex conditions and tend to be admitted because clinicians often do not have the time to explore other options. This project will develop and evaluate a unique and robust model for minimising inappropriate hospital admissions through rapid assessment of suitability for home care and complete referral information for safety and quality.

The results of the project will provide theoretically sound technologies that can better support distributed resource and task allocation in complex problem solving settings. The combination of theoretical and practical outcomes from the research will enable these technologies to be applied in decision-making settings beyond those studied directly in the project. The project contributes to Australia's ability to compete in the emerging international market for knowledge-based software applications. The project's key connections and integration with European research will also strengthen research collaboration and training opportunities for Australian based students.

Continuous process improvement through workstation feedback for General Practice medicine using experts-in-the-loop data mining. This project investigates the iterative use of data mining results to allow experts to construct feedback to influence subsequent production work. We explore the problem in the context of General Practice medicine by having General Practitioners (GPs) review emerging patterns from their own practice's electronic medical records and author feedback to discourage undesirable patterns. The work will have immediate applicability to medical practice and will drive innovation in data mining method, notably for efficient identification of temporal and complex niche patterns. More broadly, the work will extend the way data mining is used to create new expectations of workstation behaviour.

The complex and time-constrained nature of the contemporary workplace is such that there is an increasing dependence on technology to assist operators in formulating accurate and timely decisions. This project is designed to ensure that the process through which this information is presented to operators is as efficient and effective as possible under the circumstances. Using an innovative approach to the development of such decision support systems, the outcomes of this project will direct the development of this type of technology in the future and, ultimately, lead to more effective and more efficient decision-making under uncertainty.

Australia is a geographically dispersed country with locations of high concentrations of technology resources. Australia requires the ability to gather real time intelligence information in the field to support planning and operational decisions by a command team for military and civil defence operations. Currently Australia supports such operations in remote areas of the country and numerous overseas operations. A major research outcome is the design and development of interaction techniques for the mobile users in through walls collaboration systems to control and manipulate augmented reality information in the field across a number of application domains, such as medical, maintenance, military, search and rescue, and GIS visualization.

Computer systems for securities trading date from the 1980s. These systems are large, costly and extremely complex. Outcomes from their introduction were unforeseen and the relevant research literature is sparse. This project will investigate experimentally with a simulated trading system the effects on trading behaviour of important system parameters. Intelligent support systems for traders will also be developed and tested. The project team combines needed expertise from the areas of human decision making, finance, and advanced information technologies. Results will be important for theory of market microstructure and interactive intelligent systems and also for an important industry in Australia.
