Summary
The quality of evidence we use to make health care decisions can be improved if we use systematic reviews that are planned ahead, that use raw data from each participant and include all the trials that have looked at the clinical problem. This research program will utilise these three ways of obtaining better quality data and will thus make research results more reliable. In particular, we will use these techniques to address health problems in mothers and babies.
Clinical Outcomes Following Lumbar Spine Surgery Using The DIAM Non-fusion Interspinous Implant

Summary
This investigation will focus on a single minimally-invasive surgical intervention used in the treatment of disorders of the lumbar spine. The Device for Intervertebral Assisted Motion (DIAM) is a novel system for stabilizing the disc and joints of the low back which is promoted over fusion for improving stability while restoring normal vertebral alignment. This new device has limited research evaluation of efficacy and will be examined with the aim of providing clinical guidelines for its use.
Centre Of Research Excellence: Partnering With Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease To Transform Care And Outcomes (CRE-PACT)

CRE-PACT will partner with patients to generate and translate new high-priority evidence to improve outcomes that are important to people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We will address the topics and questions most important to patients. We will build the next generation of research leaders and a community of research-ready patient-partners. There will be an integrated pathway for evidence translation and implementation at a global scale to improve patient-centred outcomes.

The cost of managing arthritic conditions alone was estimated at $2.2 Billion for 2001. The technology allows us a better understanding of how people are moving and therefore of what treatments they are likely to benefit from. The Australian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (Aus-ROC) will be modelled on the highly successful North American Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium. The mission of Aus-ROC will be to conduct clinical trials and observational studies into the emergency management of out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest. Building on our existing collaborative partnerships, our goal is to improve patient outcomes and build the research capacity in prehospital emergency care.

Intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) is a serious type of stroke affecting thousands of Australians and 2-3 million people in the world each year, with most either dying or left disabled. There is no proven treatment for ICH, although surgery is sometimes used and early injection of a special clotting factor may improve outcome. There is abundant evidence that many patients do not receive medical treatments of proven effectiveness. This is even more apparent in developing countries. Strategies to improve use of proven treatments is needed. Our research aims to evaluate an educational program for doctors in Lao PDR, based on World Health Organisation guidelines for the care of sick children in hospitals, including the impact on the knowledge of doctors and on the quality of care in the hospitals in which they work.
