Summary
Molecular diagnostics based on real-time polymerase chain reactions for emerging tropical infectious diseases aimed at protecting Australia from invasive diseases. The project aims to use the technique of real-time polymerase chain reaction to rapidly detect and quantify the organisms associated with emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of man and animals. It will also be used to determine related gene expression.

The equipment will be used to support a wide range of projects that require the detection of specific RNA or DNA and it will allow the rapid, cost effective and efficient processing of either RNA or DNA from large numbers of samples. Minor variations in organisms will be detected using this equipment.

Correction of the Effects of Gradient Field Nonlinearity in Magnetic Resonance Imaging - A Complete 3-Dimensional Approach. The outcomes of this research will have direct benefits to various areas of diagnostic and interventional medicine especially in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis or brain tumors. The techniques developed in this project will in general enable MRI to provide a higher quality service to the community.
X-ray Micro-tomography Validation of HRCT-Based Airway Measurements. This project brings together a newly emergent modality of microscopy in the form of 3D X-ray micro-tomography (XRMT) along with leading-edge image analysis to develop breakthrough science in respiratory research aimed at improving the reliability of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). The project will develop novel 3D lung image segmentation protocols, a stereotactic registration program allowing 3D matching of XRCT and ....X-ray Micro-tomography Validation of HRCT-Based Airway Measurements. The HPA-axis as a marker for disruptive behaviour disorder subtypes in toddlers. Emerging neurobiological models of antisocial behaviour emphasise the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the onset of disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs). This project aims to integrate statistical methodologies in neural networks to provide a unified approach to improve its applicability and efficiency in implementation. The system developed from this proposed cross-disciplinary research will be applied to hospital utilization data (hospital morbidity database, Western Australia) and gene expression data (DNA microarrays databases, Harvard University). This collaborative research will advance the international standard of Australian research communities.
