The Ethics And Politics Of Pharmaceutical Innovation And Translation

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $476,728.00
    Summary
I lead a research program on the ethics and politics of pharmaceutical innovation and translation: how medicines are developed, regulated, funded and taken up into practice. I aim to help policymakers to deal with conflicts among stakeholders. Over the next 4 years I will conduct a suite of research projects on topics of immediate significance to Australian policymakers; develop a new framework for pharmaceutical ethics and create a “Pharmaceutical Ethics and Politics Network.”

Improving Research Evidence Quality Using Individual Patient Data, Prospective Meta-analysis And Trial Registration

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $387,489.00
    Summary
The quality of evidence we use to make health care decisions can be improved if we use systematic reviews that are planned ahead, that use raw data from each participant and include all the trials that have looked at the clinical problem. This research program will utilise these three ways of obtaining better quality data and will thus make research results more reliable. In particular, we will use these techniques to address health problems in mothers and babies.

Towards Precision Medicine For Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $463,652.00
    Summary
Better outcomes are needed for lung cancer, a disease that accounts for more cancer-related deaths than any other cancer in Australia or worldwide. My goals are to 1) develop and evaluate in clinical trials targeted therapies and immunotherapies and 2) identify clinically relevant blood and tissue based biomarkers for lung cancer patients. This combination of clinical and translational research will change practice and improve outcomes by delivering precision medicine for lung cancer patients.

Regenerative Neuroscience Strategies For Healthy Brain Ageing And Dementia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $463,652.00
    Summary
Promotion of healthy brain ageing and prevention of dementia are amongst Australia's greatest medical challenges and of utmost concern to the public. This Fellowship will support a multidisciplinary approach to these challenges based around regenerative neuroscience. Valenzuela's group is a world leader in the science and practice of brain plasticity, and will lead twelve interlinked studies aimed at developing better ways to prevent dementia.

Central Blood Pressure: Physiology And Clinical Application

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $459,270.00
    Summary
Current methods used by doctors to measure blood pressure (BP) have many limitations that could result in incorrect diagnosis and inappropriate treatment of high BP (hypertension). This research program will determine the clinical usefulness of new methods to diagnose and treat people with high BP. The underlying mechanisms contributing to high BP will also be examined. The findings will lead to improved ways to identify and more effectively manage people with high BP.

Discovering The Genetic Causes Of Congenital Heart Disease Using Systems Biology

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $419,180.00
    Summary
Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects one in one hundred live-born babies, representing a significant health burden in Australia and worldwide. My research team is using state-of-the-art DNA sequencing technology to sequence the entire genome of hundreds of patients with CHD and their family members. My research program develops fast and reliable computer software to accelerate the discovery of the genetic causes of CHD, and make personalised genome-based medicine a reality.
