The aim of this Network is to harness the resources of leading researchers from the previously distinct disciplines of developmental biology and developmental physiology to better understand developmental regulatory networks and how environmental factors impinge on them. The formation of such a Network is unique, timely and strategic in that it will generate new insights into the mechanisms by which events in early life determine the risk of adverse outcomes in perinatal and adult life.Read moreRead less

Structural and functional characterisation of PI3Kgamma, uniquely activated by p101. The movement of cells is involved in all aspects of life including development, growth and maintenance of organisms. The movement of cells is involved in all aspects of life including development, growth and maintenance of organisms. In spite of this, our understanding of the mechanism involved in cell migration is limited. There are a number of conditions in which the ability to control cell movement would be of significant benefit. Examples include autoimmune conditions, asthma and cancer, the social and economic burdens of which account for billions of dollars and millions of Australians. This project aims to understand one of the major mechanisms that controls cell migration, which is expected to produce significant economic and social outcomes in the areas of basic science knowledge, human health, and biotechnology. The aim of this project is to establish the South Australian Facility for Advanced Molecular Imaging. The Facility builds on existing expertise and cooperation between the collaborating institutions to expand our capability in advanced analytical confocal microscopy of a wide range of materials from living cells to artificial surfaces. New state-of-the-art microscopes will allow the direct quantitative analysis of molecular interactions with high temporal and spatial resolutions. This will advance: understanding the regulation of cellular signalling, gene expression and growth in normal and pathological conditions; development of biosensor technology; and the application of new biomaterials in medicine and industry.Read moreRead less
A shipload of consequences: studying the impact of Old World diseases on native South American populations via ancient DNA. This pioneering project will give the first real-time picture of the genetic changes induced by epidemics in human populations. This will reveal important new information about the likely impact of future epidemics on the genetic diversity of the immune system in modern human populations and will be of substantial use in building epidemiological models. This pioneering project will give the first real-time picture of the genetic changes induced by epidemics in human populations. This will reveal important new information about the likely impact of future epidemics on the genetic diversity of the immune system in modern human populations and will be of substantial use in building epidemiological models. By proposing to combine state-of-the-art science with global problems of humanity, we will address Australia's interests in expanding scientific expertise beyond its borders and place Australia at the leading edge of disease impact studies.Read moreRead less

This project uses transgenic plant technology to elucidate how mitochondrial function impacts on the profile of metabolites in plant cell and tissues and whether altering these profiles influences a plant's ability tog row in harsh conditions. It will contribute to our fundamental knowledge of plant metabolism using a metabolomic anaylsis of plant stress response. This will be achieved using new high-throughput technologies, allowing reliable qualitative and quantitative analysis of large numbers of samples. This approach will compliment existing genomic and proteomic analyses of plants exposed to abiotic stress.Read moreRead less

The project will upgrade and expand the Newcastle Plant Growth Facility. The upgrades will improve glasshouse environments for the production of high quality plant material. This outcome will be achieved through increasing solar transmittance and more effective temperature control. Expansion will address unmet demand for standard and PC2 plant growth space. Together the infrastructure additions will enhance productivity and excellence of core areas of plant biology research at Newcastle in nutrient transport, cell development as well as environment management and rehabilitation . In addition, they will underpin new collaborative initiatives at the interfaces between plant biology with transgenic delivery of reproductive vaccines and phytoremediation.Read moreRead less

They participate in generating the cellular responses to hormones, growth factors and other physiological stimuli. The aims of this project are to elucidate the mechanisms that regulate the activity of store-operated channels and how their properties can be modulated by different pharmacological agents. Using chiefly the techniques of electrophysiology and molecular biology we expect to learn the fundamental mechanisms that modulate the opening and closing of store-operated calcium channels and to gain an important information that can be used for determining the molecular structure of these channelsRead moreRead less
