The project will directly benefit the Victorian power industry through water saving. If the new proposed hybrid cooling system concept is proved to be practically feasible, it will put the Australian power industry in a strong competitive position in terms of its efficiencies and waste heat recovery technology. Lowering the temperature of water into the cooling tower by 2 degree, by using the hybrid cooling system, it would save over 17,500,000 tons of makeup water per year for the Victorian power industry alone. At the same time, the waste heat recovered by the heat pump can be fed back to the power generation cycle. Read moreRead less
The Production of Respiratory Cell Lineages from Human Embryonic Stem Cells: Towards a Cell Replacement Therapy for the Treatment of Respiratory Specific Deficits. Embryonic stem (ES) cells are a primitive embryonic cell type that can be maintained and grown in vitro. Mouse ES cells can be instructed to develop into a wide range of specific adult cell types. Research into human ES cells has more recently commenced and has already resulted in the controlled production of specific nerve cells by our group. The following project aims to create respiratory lineages from both mouse and human ES cells. Such an undertaking thus aims to provide a basis for the treatment of respiratory specific diseases such as cystic fibrosis and emphysema.Read moreRead less
Monitoring and Modelling Hydrogeochemical Interactions with Groundwater : Implications for Mine Dewatering on Groundwater, River and Lake Chemistry. Alcoa operates a power station and brown coal mine at Anglesea in western Victoria. Alcoa operates a power station and brown coal mine at Anglesea in western Victoria. Following heavy rain in 2000 acidic water entered the Anglesea estuary causing precipitation of iron and aluminium flocs and fish kills. Estuary closure to tourism resulted. This project will identify the cause(s) of this phenomenon by modelling groundwater movement and studying geochemical processes. The resultant hydrogeochemical model will also be applied to simulating longer term water quality changes in the catchment arising from current mine dewatering operations and future rewatering following mine closure.

Numerical and experimental studies of the gas-particle flow and dust collection in electrostatic precipitation systems. This project will generate an integrated computer model to describe the gas-solid flow and dust collection in an ElectroStatic Precipitator (ESP). The model can be used to aid the design and control of ESP systems which are widely used for dust collection, leading to more competitive energy and related industries.
Production of diesel from the catalytic pyrolysis of waste plastics. Large amounts of waste plastics go to landfill daily. Large amounts of waste plastics go to landfill daily. Landfill simply buries our wastes for future generations and can contribute to the contamination of ground water. This project aims to develop an advanced pyrolysis technology to produce transport diesel from waste plastics. This technology is an economically attractive and environmentally friendly way for the disposal of waste plastics without any environmental problems associated with the landfill or direct incineration of waste plastics. As this technology is based on advances in Australian research and development, exporting this to other countries will further enhance its economic and social benefits to Australia.Read moreRead less

This Project aims to develop solutions for low-income renters to access solar energy. Low-income households spend higher proportions of income on electricity costs. Solar energy is a key way to reduce electricity costs and thus improve energy affordability. Renters are largely excluded from this opportunity. Intended Project outcomes are solutions to access solar energy suitable for widespread application to low-income private, public and community rental housing. Adoption of the Project’s outcomes are expected to benefit low-income renters, assist electricity retailers to maintain and extend their customer base, and provide commercial incentives for the many stakeholders providing rental housing and residential solar and battery systems.Read moreRead less

Chronic inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, affect millions of people leading to considerable suffering, economic loss and premature death. Anti-TNF treatments have recently shown success in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and other conditions, however, a substantial number of patients (~50%) do not respond to the current TNF treatments. Improved anti-TNF strategies would provide enhanced health outcomes and welcome relief to many Australians. In addition, the economic benefit of the TNF market is very substantial. Therefore the potential impact of this research is very high both for health care and economical potential.Read moreRead less

In the absence of a reliable predictive capability for turbulent heat transfer, design engineers are currently forced to incorporate safety margins into their calculations to compensate for aero-thermal loading uncertainty, which ultimately limits the opportunities for high-efficiency designs. This project employs high-fidelity simulations and experiments of real-world heat transfer problems, as identified by our partner organisation, MHI, an industry leader, combined with a novel data-driven model development framework. Outcomes will be a fundamental advance in our predictive capability and understanding of turbulent heat transfer, which in turn will permit more reliable, efficient and durable designs for energy generation.Read moreRead less
