Summary
Anaemia, malaria and HIV affect millions of people worldwide, but interactions between these conditions are poorly understood. A haematologist with training in public health, my interest is in finding ways to control the enormous global burden of anaemia. My research will focus on how iron status influences infection with malaria and HIV. It will provide evidence for anaemia control guidelines and help improve global policies for controlling iron deficiency where these infections coexist.
Projecting Difference: A History of the Practice and Politics of French Cinema since 1980. This cultural history project has dual aims. Firstly, it will examine how French cinema, as a narrative art, has since the late 20th century become a major vector for defining cultural identity (partially eclipsing the role traditionally occupied by literature). The global self: screening the history of human rights in the 20th century to the present. This project will research the history and theory of human rights as represented in film and new media. It will analyse the origins and development of human rights theory and document the changes in films about human rights in order to understand how we now conceptualise human rights in the twenty-first-century.

Often unfamiliarity with Aboriginal cultural conceptualisations on the part of non-Aboriginal people leads to miscommunication, disadvantaging Aboriginal speakers, especially in institutional contexts (for example, schoolrooms, courtrooms, Centrelink offices). By evaluating Australia's role in East Asian media circuits, this project aims to identify new industry and consumer trends. The rise of East Asian media industries, estimated to be worth US$120 billion and reaching at least 2 billion consumers, is changing Australian media culture. Inside the Indonesian bureaucracy: a sociolinguistic study of the role of talk in the doing of bureaucratic work. While talk is central to the conduct of everyday life, we know little about its role in the doing of everyday tasks in multilingual institutional settings in Indonesia. This project seeks to fill this gap by investigating the role of talk in the building and maintenance of social relationships in a multilingual Indonesian bureaucracy.

Summary
Little is known about the inter-relationship of cultural factors and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes and these relationships have not been quantified. Through a large cohort study, this research will produce data that combines standard health measures with newly developed quantitative measures of cultural factors, supported by data linkage infrastructure. Robust analytical methods will be used to inform policy and program development.
