Mechanisms Of Premature Cranial Fusion: Role Of Retinol Binding Protein 4 In Osteogenesis And Suture Fusion
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$555,855.00
Summary
Craniosynostosis is a condition where the skull bones fuse prematurely, affecting skull shape, vision and cognition. It occurs in 1 in 2,500 births. The only treatment is surgery, which is life-threatening, costly and may need to be repeated. By studying how fusion happens in this project we may be able to devise therapies to minimize the risks and need for re-operation. Here, we hope to show that modification of a single substance in the skull of mouse models can prevent premature bone fusion.

We will generate new knowledge of Australian LGBTIQ+ history and links between historical knowledge and wellbeing in relation to LGBTIQ+ youth. Working with LGBTIQ+ youth we will also develop new archival storytelling techniques, theorising archives as ‘laboratories of belonging’. In doing so, the project forges links between cultural studies of storytelling, LGBTIQ+ youth studies and Australian history. Benefits include innovations in reparative historical methodologies, new resources for the GLAM, youth and education sectors and improvements in LGBTIQ+ youth wellbeing.Read moreRead less

This project aims to explain how children's speech processing adapts to cultural and linguistic diversity and how such adaptation may seed sound change in language. Using acoustic and articulatory (ultrasound) methods, the project intends to explain how children rapidly and authentically acquire the intricately nuanced accents of their communities. The project aims to advance theories of language variation and change by providing new insights into the forces that shape the sounds of language. An understanding of how children's speech patterns develop and ultimately converge to local norms has implications for the social integration of second language learning children and refugee/asylum seekers, and for clinical and speech technology applications for children.Read moreRead less
