By introducing random DNA mutations into the germline, mice with diseaseassociated characteristics can be generated, allowing the subsequent identification of genes involved in particular human disease processes. This project will utilise cutting-edge genetic technologies to discover genes that regulate production of the bodys principal blood clotting agents: platelets. This is of particular clinical and commercial importance since a reduction in platelet numbers is the life-threatening result of congenital and autoimmune diseases, viral infections (e.g. HIV) and cancer chemotherapy.Read moreRead less

The mammalian genome projects have provided a huge leap forward for biological research by giving the framework to study genes on a global scale. This project will provide human genome project scale information for every major tissue in mammals and will provide the research community with a world class resource to further genomic research. It will also investigate parts of gene regulation which have been invisible to researchers in the past. Discovering these rules will provide novel insights in pathology with a genetic component and provide a further boost to biotechnological approaches to obtain expression of specific sets of genes in model systems. Shells and skeletons are produced by a wide range of animals. These highly-order crystalline structures are genetically-encoded and produce high-performance composite materials that exceed present capabilities in human engineering. This international collaboration will elucidate the molecular mechanisms controlling the fabrication of these architectures. This knowledge will contribute significantly to the development of materials for advanced electronics and energy transducers, human bone therapeutics and marine-based products such as pearls and cements, through the identification of genes underlying biofabrication networks and the development of in vitro bioproduction systems.Read moreRead less

Agriculture is one of Australia's mainstay industries and a major user of insecticides. However, current insecticides suffer a number of significant deficiencies, including collateral damage in the environment and insect resistance. One of the major targets for insecticides are a class of neuronal receptors, found in organisms ranging from worms to man. Our work will provide a detailed biological understanding of these receptors leading to better ways of developing new insecticides. Similar receptors in humans are the target for nicotine and associated with neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Thus our work will also increase our understanding of important human receptors associated with disease.Read moreRead less
