Over the past 15 years, the proportion of Australian teenagers who drink alcohol has halved. This project aims to understand the drivers of this major shift in teenage drinking behaviour. Initial work has shown that drinking has declined across demographic, socio-economic and cultural groups. This project plans to use mixed methods to analyse new and existing data to examine four potential drivers of this generational change in behaviour. Understanding the reasons behind this shift is important both to expand knowledge about the socio-cultural conditions shaping teenage alcohol consumption practices, and to support and maintain these trends through informed social policy.Read moreRead less

Moreover, the large income disparities between Australia and its neighbours put many burdens on Australia to manage immigration, accommodate refugees, and provide support to regional governments. This study uses data from around the world to model how global and regional economic integration is changing over time. Of special importance for Australia is this study's focus on the robustness of national and regional boundaries in times of crisis. The study will use innovative statistical techniques to help us better understand Australia's place in the world-economy, its relationship to the Asia-Pacific region, and the region's connections to the wider world.Read moreRead less

Some of the most invisible, yet essential work in the global economy is done by low wage migrant workers. The proposed research aims to understand why migrants acquiesce to exploitative conditions, using a literary analysis of novels and ethnography of migrant workers in Sydney, Mumbai, and New York. It offers an urgent contribution to social science and policy debates over labour, collective action, and the nature of inequality in global cities. Expected outcomes include new ways of conceiving migrant worker agency and new frameworks for theorising power. Immediate attention is needed to address the ongoing exploitation of migrant workers and to provide information for policymakers to craft interventions to regulate low wage migrant work.Read moreRead less
Women's concepts, beliefs and practices related to the health of their infants and young children: a sociological study. It has been frequently argued that parents should take responsibility for promoting optimal health and development in their children. Little is known, however, about how parents of infants and young children conceptualise 'good health' in relation to their children, what steps they take to promote optimal health and development, how they make decisions about these steps, what sources of information they use, what difficulties they may encounter and what help they need. Insights into these phenomena derived from the proposed project have the potential to inform policy and programs directed at promoting and maintaining good health in the early years of life.Read moreRead less

Rates of intergenerational financial support with first home ownership have skyrocketed over the last decade. This project aims to understand how this support is negotiated within families. It will use innovative qualitative methods to identify how this form of financial assistance impacts upon families over time, and from the perspectives of multiple family members. Expected outcomes include a new, systematic framework to recognise how families shape young adults’ pathways into home ownership and to develop evidence-based financial policy. This should provide significant benefits including greater protection for both donors and recipients of financial assistance when purchasing property. Read moreRead less
