Visualisation is a key way to understand networks. This project plans to develop a new paradigm for this task. Using modern generic constrained optimisation techniques it will produce layouts for small graphs whose quality is similar to that produced by hand, something that is not possible with current approaches. These algorithms will then be used to visualise large graphs. Instead of simply trying to visualise every node and link in the graph. The project will develop techniques to extract useful subsets or abstractions that are as small possible, yet sufficient to answer targeted queries. The techniques for producing small high-quality diagrams will then be applicable to presenting these focused visualisations.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop explainable models for creative AI systems which enable more productive and satisfying interactions between them and their human co-creators. This will boost both human and machine creativity through sustained, ongoing exchanges, leading to high-quality creative outcomes via automated ideation and more advanced human-machine collaborations. The proposed techniques will be validated with creative professionals, ensuring practical industry relevance. We expect the outcomes to include new methods that automatically generate persuasive explanations, new forms of communication including dialogues between creative AI systems and users, and new understanding of general aspects of explainability for creative AI systems.Read moreRead less
Location-Based Personalisation in Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce). M-commerce, though playing an important role in future competitiveness of Australia, suffers a low user demand. Our work gains an understanding of users' concerns and expectations of location-based services, which leads to better application designs and thus a wider adoption. An examination of users' attitude towards personalised content and concerns about data privacy provides insights to Australian legislation in relation to telemarketing and data-driven marketing. National benefits will stem from a balance between telemarketing efficiency and users' benefits.Read moreRead less

This artificial project aims to develop a theory of strategic deception and test it through an Artificial Intelligence model. The project will combine computational Theory-of-Mind concepts with recent scientific findings to allow us to better understand whether and how intelligent technologies of the future might deceive humans. The findings will provide new insights into how Artificial Intelligence technologies of the future will impact applied areas of computing, where simulating advanced forms of social behaviour and cognition, including deception, will become increasingly significant.Read moreRead less

This project addresses unsolved issues of usability of e-health information systems across diverse stakeholder communities that need to coordinate to deliver the expected revolution in patient-centred health care. The project will help realise the Nation's large investment in e-health by improving the likelihood of system acceptance, thus making a significant contribution to facilitating the important institutional transformations expected of these systems. The timeliness, depth and breadth of the study will yield outcomes that will enhance Australia's research reputation. This project directly addresses the 'smart information use' and 'promoting and maintaining good health' national research prioritiesRead moreRead less

Growing numbers of children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, leading to a massive financial burden on educational, medical and social service systems. This project aims to construct technological solutions to ease this cost with software frameworks for both children and parents. These novel tools and techniques address key issues: personalisation of early intervention, extension of interventions in alternate contexts, and parental support through analysis of social media. The outcomes aim to include algorithms and prototype applications for flexible early intervention and support for parents and carers, including evaluation of the developed tools in real-world settings.Read moreRead less

This project aims to create a framework which allows authoring, reading and storing of tactile electronic books for people with vision impairment by using multi-touch, audio, and tactile technologies. The project expects to generate new knowledge in the areas of human computer interaction and information visualisation utilising new techniques to present visual information in the form of audio and tactile. Expected outcomes of the project are to reduce the cost of authoring accessible textual and graphical content, and to provide a practical and intuitive reading experience. This should provide benefits to people with vision impairment while accessing information in a more effective and efficient way.Read moreRead less
Accessible Data Exploration and Analysis for Blind People. This project aims to develop new assistive technologies that will enable blind people to explore and analyse data more readily. The project expects to generate new knowledge in the fields of assistive technology, multimodal interfaces, dialogue systems and natural language understanding and generation. This project aims to develop new assistive technologies that will enable blind people to explore and analyse data more readily. The project expects to generate new knowledge in the fields of assistive technology, multimodal interfaces, dialogue systems and natural language understanding and generation. The expected outcome of the project is an innovative conversational agent that uses a mix of speech and tactile graphics to communicate with a blind user and proactively assists with data analysis tasks. This should provide significant benefits, as it will overcome barriers to data analysis and exploration by blind people that currently restrict access to government, health and personal data, and limit employment opportunities.Read moreRead less
An integrated and real-time passenger travel and public transport service information system. This project will help the Department of Transport provide improved services to the public through a better understanding of journey planning demands in comparison to public transport services. By integrating research through design methods with technological solutions, the project will deliver better quality of service and higher customer satisfaction.

This project aims to combine strengths of human cognition and evolutionary computing to efficiently solve problems which neither can do alone. The project will develop techniques combining advanced non-intrusive sensor measures of behaviour and emotional reaction in interaction tasks to enable high level computer support for human goal seeking, in complex data and design environments. This project will allow non-expert users to use tools normally requiring extensive training in settings where the user can 'see' when they get something they like but do not know how to instruct a computer system to show or do it. Applications of the project will include visualisation for bespoke manufacturing or for high dimensional data, generating abstract art, or improving teleconferencing systems.Read moreRead less
