The Interaction Of LPS Pathway Genes With Pre-natal And Early Exposure To LPS And Allergens Predicts Atopy At Age One

Funding Amount
$381,263.00
Summary
The poor understanding of the cause of asthma has made prevention strategies unsuccessful. This study will provide valuable data for understanding the interactions between exposure to environmental stimuli and LPS pathway genes on the development of allergy and asthma in infants. As environmental modifications and dietary interventions during pregnancy are being investigated, the findings from the proposed study will be important in guiding prevention practices of allergic diseases.

Waxing And Waning Of Asthma During Transition From The Teens To Adulthood: Identification Of Immunophenotypic Markers To Predict Disease Trajectory And Guide Development Of Treatment Strategies To Prevent Progression To Chronicity
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$736,166.00
Summary
The project will seek to identify biomarkers in teenage/young adult asthmatics that can distinguish between those who are "growing out" of the disease, versus those who are progressing towards chronic severe asthma. This knowledge will inform the development of more effective treatment programs for this age group.
The Role Of Infant Food Allergy In The Natural History And Burden Of Allergic Disease Across The Early Years: The HealthNuts Study
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,722,373.00
Summary
The HealthNuts study of 4600 infants is the world’s first comprehensive population-based study of food allergy with objective measurement of true food allergy and will enable us to understand better the natural history of allergic disorders including food allergy, asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis and the interplay of risk factors for development of these conditions in the first 6 years of life. The study will have important implications for clinical guidelines and public health policy.
Expanding The Power Of Genetic Analysis Of Complex Traits In Multiply Phenotyped Twin Sibships

Summary
Our aim is to identify genes influencing common diseases including melanoma, asthma and cardiovascular disease. We measure adolescent twins for moliness, skin, hair and eye colour and a variety of blood traits. We have already found new genes for mole count, eye colour, skin damage, and several different blood cell types. For each of these disease traits there are many more genes to be found and these will inform new treatments. We plan to genotype 600 new families (2000 individuals) to help ach ....Our aim is to identify genes influencing common diseases including melanoma, asthma and cardiovascular disease.
