The HealthNuts study of 4600 infants is the world’s first comprehensive population-based study of food allergy with objective measurement of true food allergy and will enable us to understand better the natural history of allergic disorders including food allergy, asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis and the interplay of risk factors for development of these conditions in the first 6 years of life. The study will have important implications for clinical guidelines and public health policy.

Our aim is to identify genes influencing common diseases including melanoma, asthma and cardiovascular disease. We measure adolescent twins for moliness, skin, hair and eye colour and a variety of blood traits. We have already found new genes for mole count, eye colour, skin damage, and several different blood cell types. For each of these disease traits there are many more genes to be found and these will inform new treatments. In this study we will assess how early lung function evolves in relation to potential insults such as lower respiratory tract infections and allergic inflammation. Food allergy (FA) has risen to epidemic proportions in recent times and Australia has one of the highest rates in the world. FA is most common in children under 5 years, yet adolescents are at the greatest risk of death from food-related anaphylaxis. We don’t know why this is the case. Our research will describe FA prevalence and will assess the factors placing FA adolescents at high risk of severe allergic reactions. Findings will influence policy for management of FA and anaphylaxis.

Asthma affects 10-15% of Australian. Repeated respiratory viral infections increase the risk of developing asthma, and are also the principal cause of asthma attacks. Asthmatics may be more susceptible to respiratory viral infections due to a defect in the innate antiviral response to infection. Here we aim to identify defects in the antiviral response of children who are at risk of developing asthma, and understand how they occur so that future therapies may be developed.
