    Investigating The Role Of Psychosocial Factors: The Impact Of Contextual Influences On Cardiovascular Risk

    Understanding the mechanism by which contextual features are associated with risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has implications for the development of efficient and targeted interventions. In three different studies we assess if the link between the context in which individuals live or work and risk for CVD (1) is indirect through effects on psychosocial factors and (2) varies as a function of such psychosocial factors in the general population and in populations at elevated risk.

    Genes And Environment In The Risk Of Early Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Population-based Case-Control Study

    This study will pool data from three well-conducted population-based cohorts of older persons to gain a large sample size in order to investigate the interplay of genes and environmental factors on the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The study will give insights into AMD pathogenesis, and enable potential targeting of people with AMD susceptibility genes for preventive approaches. These could ultimately reduce the burden of this blinding condition.

    Aetiology, Burden And Causal Pathways Of Acute Lower Respiratory Infections Using Population Linked Data

    Lower respiratory, or chest infections, are a problem for many children. This project will investigate the impact of chest infections on hospitals and emergency departments, the viruses and bacteria that cause them, identify those children who are at an increased risk of having chest infections and investigate the impact of routine immunisations on specific types of infections. This project will greatly add to our understanding of chest infections so appropriate interventions can be developed.

    This study will pool cases from the West Australian Macular Degeneration database with the Blue Mountains Eye Study (NSW), to investigate the interplay of genes and environmental factors on risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), in particular the late, vision threatening stage. It will provide insights into the underlying causes of AMD, and could allow us to target people with AMD susceptibility genes for preventive approaches, which could reduce the burden of this disease.

    The Epidemiology Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Antibiotic Resistance In Community-acquired Infections

    Summary
    Staphylococcus aureus infections range from boils to life-threatening diseases and are increasingly resistant to antibiotics and difficult to treat. This study follows patients with community-acquired S. aureus infections, and close contacts, for 24 months to see if they carry S. aureus (nose swabs) or develop infection. Our data on risk factors for colonisation and infection will help doctors decide whether to trace and treat contacts of patients to protect households from further infection.

    Thailand's disease patterns are changing. Some changes are good but others, like emerging diabetes, heart disease and injuries, are of concern. Development-related 'health transition' can be optimised if there is information on new causes of disease - immediate risk factors, and 'upstream' economic, cultural and environmental influences. The team will study this health-risk transition in the whole Thai population - looking back 50 years, then forwards in 100,000 Sukothai Thammathirat Open Univer .... Thailand's disease patterns are changing. Some changes are good but others, like emerging diabetes, heart disease and injuries, are of concern. Development-related 'health transition' can be optimised if there is information on new causes of disease - immediate risk factors, and 'upstream' economic, cultural and environmental influences. The team will study this health-risk transition in the whole Thai population - looking back 50 years, then forwards in 100,000 Sukothai Thammathirat Open University students living all over Thailand and followed for four years. The team will map changing risks and upstream influences, produce information for Thai preventive programs, boost regional research capacity, create a regional partnership, and support PhD and postdoctoral training.
