This multidisciplinary project aims to be the first transoceanic investigation of pearling in the Indian Ocean World (IOW), focusing on the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, India/Sri Lanka, Sulu Sea and northern Australia. Whether in international relations (e.g., the borders of Afghanistan) or critical theory (Edward Said and followers), the "colonial project" affects our lives. Yet many seminal documents from which "the colonial" grew are rare and seldom read, even by researchers. Encouraging Australians to respect faith adherence has never been more urgent, and recent events in Bendigo illustrate the social cost of religious intolerance. Australia is fast approaching the centenary of Anzac Day and many believe this is the one day of the year that captures the spirit of the nation. This project will examine Anzac Day's complex and much contested history, retrieving private and collective memories of war through archival research and novel and participatory public history.
War and displacement: from the Soviet Union to Australia in the wake of the Second World War. This project studies postwar immigrants who came from the Soviet Union via Displaced Persons camps in Europe and elsewhere and encountered an Australia already in the grip of Cold War anti-communism and spy mania. Transnational in scope, themes and sources, this project adds a new strand to the story of the making of the Australian people.

The TLCMap will expand the use of Australian cultural and historical data for research through sharply defined and powerful discovery mechanisms, enabling researchers to visualise hidden geographic and historical patterns and trends, an ....Time-layered cultural map of Australia. The Time-layered cultural map (TLCMap) of Australia is an online research platform that will deliver researcher driven national-scale infrastructure for the humanities, focused on mapping, time series, and data integration. The TLCMap will expand the use of Australian cultural and historical data for research through sharply defined and powerful discovery mechanisms, enabling researchers to visualise hidden geographic and historical patterns and trends, and to build online resources which present to a wider public the rich layers of cultural data in Australian locations. TLCMap is not a singular project or software application with a defined research outcome, but infrastructure linking geo-spatial maps of Australian cultural and historical information, adapted to time series and will be a significant contribution to humanities research in Australia. For researchers, it will transform access to data and to visualisation tools and open new perspectives on Australian culture and history.
