The export of Chinese architecture to the Third World; China's international role in development. This project examines the global dimension of nation building through an investigation into the export of Chinese architecture to the Third World as part of its overseas aid programs between 1956 and 1989. Australia's bilateral relationship with China is one of our most important, and the overseas aid program is an important aspect of our foreign policy. Consumer Culture: the influence of economics on modern theories and practices of sexual psychology. The project has implications for a wide range of public debates in Australia today, including debates about the ethics and psychology of the pornography industry and the pervasive use of the ‘sex sells’ principle in marketing and entertainment. It will produce new knowledge and understanding of how psychological theory has been used to rationalise the commercialisation of sex in consumer culture a ....Consumer Culture: the influence of economics on modern theories and practices of sexual psychology. The project has implications for a wide range of public debates in Australia today, including debates about the ethics and psychology of the pornography industry and the pervasive use of the ‘sex sells’ principle in marketing and entertainment. The Embodiment of Melancholy: A Feminist Analysis of Depression. This project is a multidisciplinary investigation of depression. Drawing on a wealth of biomedical data about depression, and integrating this with psychodynamic research and feminist theories of embodiment, the project will develop robust theoretical tools for understanding the impact of endemic depression on the body. The Cultural Impact of Irregular Marriage in the Age of British Colonialism, 1660-c.1860. Marriage has always been central to our understanding of relations between literature, society and culture. This project significantly revises that understanding by focussing on the irregular marriage practices which thrived in Britain and its colonies from 1660 to c.1860. Marriage has always been central to our understanding of relations between literature, society and culture. This project significantly revises that understanding by focussing on the irregular marriage practices which thrived in Britain and its colonies from 1660 to c.1860. It demonstrates, for instance, how the novel genre became respectable partly by marginalising irregular marriages; how Gretna Green weddings came to typify modern romance in drama and fiction; and how marriage regulations underpinned literary portrayals of civil society in the Australian penal colony. Manichaean and Medieval Christian (Nestorian and Catholic) remains in Quanzhou (S. China) - an epigraphical, iconographical and historical investigation. This is a UNESCO-sponsored project, conducting research into Manichaean and Christian missionary activities around the port city of Quanzhou (Zaitun) in the 12th and 13th centuries. The research is being conducted in conjunction with the Quanzhou Museum of Maritime Contacts, and the results will be published for the Museum in a catalogue of Sy ....Manichaean and Medieval Christian (Nestorian and Catholic) remains in Quanzhou (S. The Atacama and Australian mining companies: identity, intercultural communication and negotiation in northern Chile. The involvement by state administrations and global corporations in planning for social responsibility in mining and the resulting negotiations with citizens - especially groups identified as indigenous - brings a range of people into dialogue. However, these contexts are under-researched.
