Optimising Volunteer Management Strategy at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (Victoria). This project reconceptualises volunteering as a ?cultural practice? (de Certeau 1984) to enable the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) to optimise its volunteer management through an enhanced understanding of who its volunteers are and why they volunteer for the ?blood bank?. Its operating premise is that knowing one's volunteer workforce is essential to their effective management. It builds on .... It builds on the platform of volunteer studies established by social research and extends it via a critical reconsideration of the work of Michel de Certeau.

Analysis of the structure of latin squares. The benefits to Australia of fundamental research in core disciplines such as mathematics are well documented. Discrete mathematics and combinatorics are boom disciplines of the computer age and this project seeks new knowledge concerning basic building blocks of combinatorial mathematics. The outcomes will be of interest to theoretical discrete mathematicians around the world, enhancing Australia's already high research profile in this important area of pure mathematical research. Importantly, the problems under investigation offer substantial opportunity for excellent postgraduate training, critical for the future of Australian research.

This Project will result in better methods for designing the algorithms that all computer applications depend on. Algorithms are the instruction sets that tell computers how to process information. Some information processing tasks are intrinsically difficult, even for computers working at enormous speeds. This Project will deliver new mathematical approaches to overcome these difficulties. More efficient algorithmic approaches for difficult problems enable advances in all areas of computer applications such as medical diagnosis and health prediction, national security, communications efficiency, industrial productivity and all fields of science and engineering.

Bringing indigenous knowledge into early childhood settings. This project will produce a negotiated model of Indigenous teaching and learning in early childhood settings by documenting the diversity of Indigenous knowledge from the Northern Territory. This model will be suitable for sharing with Indigenous and non-Indigenous children within the early childhood sector. This project will produce a negotiated model of Indigenous teaching and learning in early childhood settings by documenting the diversity of Indigenous knowledge from the Northern Territory. This model will be suitable for sharing with Indigenous and non-Indigenous children within the early childhood sector. Through this sharing there can be a greater recognition and acceptance of the knowledge Indigenous children bring to early childhood programs, a facilitation of understanding in non-Indigenous children and assist in the maintenance of this knowledge for future generations.

Theoretical computer science has up until now had little impact on the design of effective heuristics. While data sets may be large, significant structure is almost always present and important to take into account when designing algorithms. Parameterised complexity considers the underlying structure by parameterising not only on the size of the input but also on structural parameters. This project aims to take advantage of the many opportunities for new theories in the design of new heuristics and in turbocharging existing heuristics for computationally hard problems.

Wellbeing not Winning: remote Indigenous identity and organised sport. This project examines the construction of Indigenous identity through organised sport in remote communities. Despite high profile successes of Indigenous people in elite sports, the effectiveness of relationships between remote communities and organised sport is not well understood. This project addresses the problem of how participation in organised sport affects identity and everyday life in remote Indigenous communities, both positively and negatively. The project aims to provide an understanding of the role of organised sport in Indigenous identity construction in remote Australia and thus open opportunities for equitable and reconciliatory modes of participation.
