This project aims to develop and implement statistical methods to fight against algorithm bias. In doing so, this project expects to generate new knowledge in the mathematical sciences by employing innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the development of fairness constraints on machine learning algorithms. Fairness will be seen through the lens of invariance, allowing the developed conceptual framework to find broad applications. Expected outcomes of this project include improved techniques for imposing invariance on deep learning algorithms. This should provide significant benefits to the general public by contributing to the advancement of socially responsible and conscientious machine learning.Read moreRead less

Identifying species is a difficult task with environmental, social and economic benefits to Australia. DNA evidence and phylogenetic methods clearly achieve this task. Conservation of rare species depends upon identification and hence robust phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetically identifying fish species has economic importance as different fish species are all managed separately, having different catch limits, catch areas and market values. Using effective phylogenetic methods, epidemiologists can track the spread of a disease through a population. Read moreRead less
Saving energy on trains - demonstration, evaluation, integration. Reducing energy use from rail transport will significantly contribute to cutting carbon dioxide emissions. This project will develop a toolkit to facilitate the introduction of in-cab technologies that help train drivers save energy and stay on time. The toolkit will make it easier to demonstrate, evaluate and integrate the system in a range of railways.
Understanding spatial trends in HIV/AIDS infections in South Africa and Australia. This project will develop quantitative methods that will be used to inform public health officials in understanding past and current HIV/AIDS epidemics as well as planning for the future of these epidemics. This project will develop quantitative methods that will be used to inform public health officials in understanding past and current HIV/AIDS epidemics as well as planning for the future of these epidemics. It will understand not only the behavioural and demographic characteristics of importance as risk factors for HIV infection in South Africa, the epicentre of the global HIV pandemic, but also the geographical spatial locations in which HIV cases are likely to emerge in the future. This project will also forecast the future geographical trends in Australia's changing HIV epidemic in order to plan for intervention strategies and prepare clinical practice appropriately.Read moreRead less

Bayesian methods of statistical analysis provide a flexible theory for addressing inference in the presence of uncertainty. Consequently Bayesian methods have enabled scientific discovery in areas characterised as complex systems where new developments in modelling and computational methods have been crucial. Significant barriers to further success involve challenges in formulating and validating models, dealing with large data sets, and developing efficient computational methods. The principal aim of this project is to develop new Bayesian modelling and computational methodology which address these challenges with broad application.Read moreRead less
Statistical Methods for Discovering Ribonucleic acids (RNAs) contributing to human diseases and phenotypes. Identifying the causative genetic factors involved in quantitative phenotypes and diseases is a major goal of biology in the 21st century and beyond. A crucial step towards this goal is identifying and classifying the functional non-protein-coding Ribonucleic acids (RNAs) encoded in the human genome. This project will make major contributions to international efforts in this area by identifying RNA molecules that contribute to quantitative phenotypes including susceptibility to disease. As such, it will directly benefit fundamental science via the discovery and classification of new molecules. Indirectly, it will lead to breakthroughs in biology, and consequently to major medical and pharmaceutical advances in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disease.Read moreRead less
Mathematical modelling of information flow in social networks. This proposal aims to develop new mathematical and statistical methods to understand information flow in social networks. By using novel information theoretic techniques, it will create new methods to characterise social information flow in social networks. These tools will allow derivation of fundamental limits of predictability for AI methods applied to digital data. This proposal aims to develop new mathematical and statistical methods to understand information flow in social networks. By using novel information theoretic techniques, it will create new methods to characterise social information flow in social networks. These tools will allow derivation of fundamental limits of predictability for AI methods applied to digital data. New mathematics of information flow will produce insights into social influence in online social networks. Benefits include: better understanding of how echo chambers may form in social networks, predictive models for how misinformation can spread online such as during an emergency, and a framework for intercomparison of AI methods applied to digital data on individuals. The project will provide new statistical methods and associated software for the analysis and modelling of complex data, as well as quality research training. This project will benefit researchers in statistics and users of statistics who encounter the complex data considered in this project and who need to model and make inferences from these data. Since these kinds of data arise in many areas (such as medicine, genetics, chemistry etc), Australia and Australian industry will ultimately benefit from the proposed research. The strengthening of international link and the training of highly trained research scientists in an area of national importance will also benefit Australia.Read moreRead less

Bayesian inference is a statistical method of choice in applied science. This project will develop innovative tools which permit Bayesian inference in problems considered intractable only a few years ago. These methods will expedite advances in multidisciplinary research across a range of applications. With these foundations, this project will accelerate national research efforts into improving frameworks for projecting trends in water availability and management, the impact of climate extremes, telecommunications engineering, HIV and infectious disease modelling and biostatistics. With many sectors unable to recruit appropriately trained statisticians within Australia, this project will train four PhD students in Bayesian statistics.

Statistical methods for analysing multi-source microarray data and building gene regulatory networks. I will devise a statistical learning technique that does not force a gene to be assigned to exactly one category. This technique reflects the biological reality that a gene can belong to two or more functional categories. I will devise a statistical learning technique that does not force a gene to be assigned to exactly one category. This technique reflects the biological reality that a gene can belong to two or more functional categories. Therefore, the new technique will improve a model's ability to identify regulatory genes in different types of cancer; these regulatory genes can be targeted by new anti-cancer drugs resulting in a more effective treatment. I will model gene regulatory networks using microarray data from multiple sources. These networks will be used to identify regulatory cliques - a group of genes that are vital for a cellular function. This will improve our understanding of debilitating conditions such as asthma.Read moreRead less
