Space-based space surveillance with robust computer vision algorithms. This project aims to develop computer vision algorithms to detect man-made objects in space. These algorithms function on nanosatellite platforms, enabling space-based space surveillance. This technology is expected to provide always-on monitoring of the Earth's orbit to enhance existing defence infrastructure and protect vital space assets, including communications and navigational satellites, in Earth’s orbit from collisions and covert sabotage. Increased space use by government and civilian agencies opens up opportunities for the space industry. This project is expected to develop Australia’s space surveillance capabilities, protect space assets and capture a growing market.Read moreRead less
A hardware accellerated platform for high-fidelity, high speed simulation of infrared scenes. Missiles present a major military and terrorist threat to aircraft and ships. Missiles present a major military and terrorist threat to aircraft and ships. A possible method to detect them is an infrared imaging system which is sensitive to a missile's spectrally unique rocket propulsion exhaust. It is both dangerous and expensive to conduct field trials; so simulation is used extensively. This project aims to use high performance computing to accelerate the slowest parts of the industrial partner's existing simulations: the generation of simulated infrared images.
This project will improve the competitiveness of the manufacturer of infrared threat and warning systems and provide research training in an area of high performance computing.

Statistical Methods of Model Fitting and Segmentation in Computer Vision. Electronic sensors such as cameras and lasers can provide a rich source of information about the position, shape, and motion of objects around us. However, to extract this information in a reliable, automatic, and accurate way requires a sophisticated statistical theory of the process. Example applications include: video surveillance (better automatic detection of moving people and vehicles and of characterising what those people and vehicles are doing), industrial prototyping and inspection (measuring the size and shape of objects), urban planning (laser scanning streetscapes to create computer models of cities), entertainment industry (movie special effects and games), etc. Read moreRead less
Intelligent and objective measurement of wool fibre diameter. More than a half million tones of wool produced in Australia per year are visually evaluated by human woolclassers. More than a half million tones of wool produced in Australia per year are visually evaluated by human woolclassers. This fibre-classing process is subjective and heavily dependent on the experience of the classers. In this project, we will objectively measure wool fibre diameter by extracting features used by human woolclassers and by combining image processing and artificial intelligence. The fractal dimension calculated by fractal based texture analysis will be correlated to fibre diameter. This approach will provide an insight into an on farm and/or in shed objective measurement of wool fibre diameter.Read moreRead less
