A physiologist describing metabolic pathways and mechanisms that regulate lipoprotein metabolism in in vitro and in vivo systems. The focus of my research is on cardiovascular disease risk reduction.

Humans have never been less physically active than in contemporary Western society. These studies will provide an evidence-basis to address the inactivity epidemic by laying the foundation for personalised and effective exercise prescriptions, to which people are more likely to adhere.
This is an application for reappointment as a Principal Research Fellow. My primary area of research is preclinical studies of addiction, with a particular emphasis on relapse. I am increasingly engaged in translational studies.

1.7 million Australians have diabetes, only ½ are diagnosed, and the incidence is increasing. Diabetes imposes high economic and social costs in Australia and globally. Diabetes is often not well managed with current therapies, and there is a strong need for new drugs to treat diabetes. This research project will search for new drug targets, to develop better medicines to treat diabetes.

Summary
Heart failure (HF) is a common, chronic cardiovascular condition characterised by a reduced capacity of the heart to function. Patients with HF have a poor quality of life and significantly reduced survival. My proposed programme of research will improve the understanding of heart failure (HF) and lead to better treatments.
Malaria is a devastating disease of global significance. With mounting resistance to current drugs and no licensed malaria vaccine, there is a pressing need to search for new strategies to reduce the global burden of malaria. My research program aims to understand how the parasites that cause malaria extensively renovate the cells in which they reside and subvert their host so that they can thrive and survive, with a view to identifying new pathways that can be targeted by drugs or vaccines.

Iron disorders and liver disease are a significant burden on society, affecting many in the prime of their life. Disordered iron metabolism also plays a significant role in many disorders and diseases including cancers, neurodegenerative and iron overload disorders, and anaemia associated with chronic disease. My objective is to understand the molecules and mechanisms involved, and to develop strategies and reagents to diagnose, prevent and treat liver and iron-related disease.

Professor Iain McGregor engages in innovative research that examines the drugs we take, their effects on the brain, and their risks and benefits. His team also develops new medications that may become future treatments for anxiety, depression and addictions.
