Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) is a powerful new tool for studying complex organic materials. The technique provides a highly sensitive method of fingerprinting not only the composition of the material but also its environmental history and behaviour. In this project the technique will be applied to a range of petroleum-related organic samples, including oil seeps from the ocean floor, and airborne particulates contributing to air pollution. The research will lead to a better understanding of geochemistry of petroleum-related materials and their potential impact on the environment and on public health.Read moreRead less

Recycling and waste management are of ever increasing concern in today's consumer society and our capacity to recycle waste is directly reliant on our ability to lower contamination levels and ensure consumer safety. Using novel analytical techniques, this project aims to characterise contaminants found in recycled PET and identify the source(s) of this contamination. Ultimately this will lead to a reduction in recycled PET contamination levels, and allow a more complete recycling process. The global objective being to generate enough relevant scientific data to assist Visy in its endeavours to achieve higher levels of environmental performances and sustainable product development.Read moreRead less
Novel approaches to the forensic identification of human remains: integration of studies of bone form and chemistry. In a global era of terrorism, crime and even natural disasters, new approaches to identify victims, and prosecute offenders, are greatly required and long overdue. The combination of new computer and chemical methods will help identify unknowns, reconstruct missing parts and separate commingled remains. Its affect on understanding bones may be like that of DNA on soft tissues. The ....Novel approaches to the forensic identification of human remains: integration of studies of bone form and chemistry. The combination of new computer and chemical methods will help identify unknowns, reconstruct missing parts and separate commingled remains. Its affect on understanding bones may be like that of DNA on soft tissues. The results will update our ability as forensic scientists to strengthen Australian security systems by improving our ability to manage accidents, disasters, terrorism and crime. This project will start international collaborations and train a new generation of Australian forensic experts.Read moreRead less

Oxidative stress bioanalytical facility. The primary national benefit of this application is that it will provide a currently unavailable, state-of-the-art facility for Australian scientists to define precisely how changes in cellular redox state contribute to biological processes relevant to health and diseases. The facility will uniquely complement, and in many cases integrate with existing facilities in this area of research in Australia. It will act as a platform for major national and inter ....Oxidative stress bioanalytical facility. It will act as a platform for major national and international research collaborations, develop cutting-edge technology and unique local skills, and contribute to Australia maintaining a leading position in redox-related research in biology and medicine. In doing so, the facility will increase the likelihood of gaining future, value-adding funding.Read moreRead less
Metal Directed Assembly of New Discrete and Framework Supramolecular Systems. An important aspect of this project is the development of strategies for assembling molecules and metals into larger units - leading to novel compounds and materials for which unusual and potentially useful properties can be anticipated. These may include materials that act as catalysts for chemical reactions or absorb and store gases (such as hydrogen for use as a fuel). More generally, the area is one that will underpin the 'bottom-up' approach (building tiny components from individual molecules and ions) in the rapidly expanding field of nanotechnology. Clearly, if Australia is to remain internationally competitive in such new technologies then an understanding of processes of the type outlined in this proposal will be essential.Read moreRead less

Nanoscale Molecular Architectures - New Metallo Cages and Capsules. The design and synthesis of novel cage and capsule-like supermolecular structures will be undertaken, including rare examples of two large cage types - one designed to incorporate two adjacent metal ions in an extended (chiral) cavity while the other utilises macrocyclic metal complexes as the 'walls' of the cage. In the latter case metal variation makes possible the alteration of the electronic environment of a guest occupying the central cavity . A third (capsule-like) system is designed to 'open' and 'close' under pH control. The present studies hold promise for underpinning the future development of nano-scale molecular devices.
