Summary
Facility for multidimensional fractionation of complex biological mixtures. Acquisition of multidimensional fractionation equipment will allow researchers to separate proteins from complex mixtures, and to compare whole protein profiles of multiple samples. This will permit correlation of specific protein changes associated with infection or disease, a major focus of post-genomic programs of research. The equipment will also provide identification of the key differentiating proteins using mini ....Facility for multidimensional fractionation of complex biological mixtures. Acquisition of multidimensional fractionation equipment will allow researchers to separate proteins from complex mixtures, and to compare whole protein profiles of multiple samples. This will permit correlation of specific protein changes associated with infection or disease, a major focus of post-genomic programs of research. The equipment will also provide identification of the key differentiating proteins using minimal material. Numerous world-class projects and researchers will be able to move more rapidly and reliably from crude cell extracts to identifiable markers, and maintain their competitive positions the recognition of key targets in drug design, disease diagnosis and vaccine development.Read moreRead less

This proposal seeks to establish a quarantined facility for 'ion chromatography-mass spectrometry', to provide high resolution ion chromatographic and mass spectrometric analytical capability to the environmental, analytical/bioanalyical, and industrial science research communities. The state-of-the-art facility will represent the only quarantined high-resolution IC-MS facility within Australia, and therefore not only support the above communities within Australia, but the potential to facilitate research collaboration internationally, including supporting Australia's leading Antarctic Science programs. Purchase of this equipment will support innovative and collaborative research addressing three of the National Research Priority areas. For example, defining novel drug delivery systems, or the chemical components present in Australia's bioresources, addresses 'Frontier technologies for building and transforming Australian industries', particularly the priority goals of breakthrough science and frontier technologies. The research into trace components in food products, and on fruit fly chemistry, relates to National Research priority four 'Safeguarding Australia', with a priority goal of protecting Australia from invasive diseases and pests. Nutraceutical research addresses the goal of 'Promoting and maintaining good health'.Read moreRead less
A global platform for identifying emerging chemical threats. This project aims to develop an automated early warning social network to systematically detect newly identified emerging chemical threats. Rapid identification of chemical exposures is key to managing chemical threats and associated risks. Global collaboration and sharing of archived, high-resolution mass spectrometry data through open/social platforms will revolutionise data processing and chemical threat identification. This project will result in a new and cost-effective approach for the identification, tracking and prioritisation of emerging chemical threats and address key national and global health risks. The outcomes include the first spatial and temporal distribution of new emerging chemical threats in Australia.Read moreRead less

This project aims to provide researchers with an integrated capability for separation, isolation, and precise structural identification of volatile compounds. It expects to deliver a systematic solution using unprecedented, automated multidimensional gas chromatographic separation, isolating pure compounds for off-line characterisation using appropriate spectroscopic tools, for example nuclear magnetic resonance. This will provide significant benefits, such as permitting traceability of (bio)-synthetic pathways, better characterise chemical signalling in plants, accelerate identification of advanced intermediates required for total synthesis of alkaloids, improve detection of metabolites, and determine interactions between small allergens and proteins.Read moreRead less

This project aims to use novel chemical separation methods combined with spectroscopy to identify useful markers in olive oil and essential oil to ensure purity, quality and authenticity, which are all ongoing issues in these industries in Australia and overseas. The project plans to compare and integrate results of multidimensional gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared analyses with data libraries to generate precise molecular identification. The outcome is expected to help monitor adulteration of oils and maintain the high quality standards of Australian produce.Read moreRead less
