    The Role Of Peripheral Blood MicroRNAs As Biomarkers Of Alzheimer’s Disease

    To investigate the role of microRNAs as biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) to allow for early diagnosis prior to the onset of clinically apparent memory decline.     This research project aims to inform our understanding of the characteristics and trajectory of speech difficulties in frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia, two forms of younger onset dementia. Findings will positively influence patient care through the identification of treatment targets and improved knowledge of prognosis.

    The Role Of Tau In Stroke

    The majority of stroke results from focal brain infarction, followed by substantial secondary excitotoxic damage in the surrounding areas. Tau has been shown to contribute to excitotoxicity and neurodegeneration in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Preliminary data show that tau reduction also protects against excitotoxic damage after experimental stroke. We aim to dissect the molecular mechanisms of stroke using a tau-deficient mouse model.

This project aims to improve the accuracy of existing diagnostic protocols for dementia by combining recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging with traditional cognitive assessments. We expect the outcome to improve detection in the early stages of disease onset so that patients may receive immediate medical treatment.

    Growth factors are essential molecules for normal brain development. Variations in the amount of the different growth factors have been implicated in such diseases as AlzheimerÍs and ParkinsonÍs disease.     The multi-centre randomised controlled POCER (Post-Operative Crohn’s Disease Recurrence) trial has shown that following “curative” surgery, the anti-tumour necrosis factor drug adalimumab prevents recurrent disease in almost all patients. I will examine the multiple factors that contribute to disease recurrence including assessment of mucosal microbiota, faecal biomarkers and serological antibody markers in patients with Crohn's disease. Results will improve clinical outcomes and change internat ....     Long-term Surgical And Socioeconomic Outcomes Following Aortopulmonary Septal Defect Repair In Children

    Summary
    About 2% of heart defects are due to communication between the 2 main arteries exiting the heart (truncus arteriosus and aortopulmonary window). If untreated, up to 30% of children die in the first year of life. With surgery many patients are now surviving into adulthood. The long-term outcomes are unknown. This study will review all patients with this defect across Australian and New Zealand. Results from this study will allow us to best manage these patients in the short and long-term.
