Australia is the world's largest producer of alumina and bauxite; and the aluminium industry is our second largest commodity exporter. This project targets the development of fundamentals of an advanced technology for aluminium production with advantages of low energy consumption, low production costs and being more environment-friendly. This frontier technology will enhance the competitiveness of the Australian aluminium industry and contribute to making an environmentally sustainable Australia. The project will also provide high quality education to final year undergraduate students. The project will contribute to the theory of metallurgical processes, particularly to the gas-solid reactions in the reduction and carburisation processes.

Mechanics of transverse friction and roughness in cold strip rolling. The transverse friction and roughness have a significant effect on the shape and surface quality of the rolled strip. However, mechanics of transverse friction in cold rolling have not been identified clearly. In this project, a two-dimensional mixed film lubrication model, which couples with the strip deformation and the roll stacks deformation, will be developed to quantify the effects of transverse friction and roughness on strip shape and surface quality. It will extend the scope of friction and roughness analysis well beyond other existing models.

Enhanced Fractionation of Mineral Particles According to Density. Aims: -to achieve a significant advance in the hydrodynamic fractionation of particles on the basis of density, and develop an algorithm to deconvolve the fractionation data to produce the underlying density distribution of the particles. Significance: This density distribution, which is used in resource assessment, plant design, and process evaluation in mineral processing, is currently produced using toxic, and environmentally damaging heavy liquids, despite the emergence of alternative mineral analysers. Expected Outcomes: -a safe, cost effective basis for generating the density distribution. Benefits: -increasing mineral resource recovery through improved access to critical data, while eliminating the need for the toxic heavy liquids.

This project will provide a fundamentally better understanding of the relationship between grain boundary segregation and the recrystallisation behaviour of steel and Al alloys. This knowledge will lead to more efficient thermomechanical processing techniques, which will be of benefit to Australia's steel and light alloy industries. The experimental techniques to be developed will be the first of their kind. They have enormous potential for use in future segregation studies of other alloy systems and are expected to make a major contribution to fundamental and applied research over the next few years.

Controlling corrosion of steel by carbon dioxide-rich gases at high temperatures. A growing difficulty for Australia is the need to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst maintaining the economic advantages of coal fired power stations. A growing difficulty for Australia is the need to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst maintaining the economic advantages of coal fired power stations. Technologies for capturing CO2 from these stations are being developed, but inevitably involve the need to handle hot CO2-rich gases. These are surprisingly corrosive to the materials of which power stations are constructed, in a way which is not fully understood. This project aims to achieve this understanding, and to provide the basis for future alloy design.

    Summary
A high-rate process for mineral flotation. Flotation is an important operation in the minerals industry, the bedrock of Australia's prosperity. Currently it is hard to recover the finest valuable particles. A new device has been discovered that is up to a 100 times faster, giving improved recoveries and much lower capital cost. This project will investigate new phenomena used in the device.

This project will address an important problem in the flotation process for the minerals industry, the recovery of composite particles, which are mixtures of pure mineral and host rock. The project will investigate several remarkable discoveries recently reported that have the potential to improve significantly the recovery of composites and, surprisingly, of particles of pure mineral as well. New flotation devices will be developed in which the flow conditions are highly favourable to the recovery of coarse and ultrafine particles, with potential to reduce the costs of grinding energy and milling media in concentrators by half.

Particle-stabilised bubble and droplet interfaces. Small particles may replace or supplement detergents in a broad range of applications. This project will provide the fundamental knowledge to optimise the use of particles to stabilise foams and emulsions in a controlled manner. This will transform economically important processes in the mining, food science or personal care industries.

The elutriation of ultrafine particles according to their density. This study is concerned with exploiting a new and powerful mechanism for separating particles according to their density, with strong potential for recovering and concentrating tens of billions of dollars worth of valuable minerals annually. By coupling the new separation mechanism with a centrifugal force it should be possible to apply gravity separation technology, arguably for the first time, to the recovery of ultrafine particles from 200 microns to well below 10 microns, at high separation efficiency, and high feed rates. This study is also ideal for training new researchers, especially at the PhD level, in an area of importance to Australia's economic future.
