I am a behavioural scientist interested in the causes and prevention of hazardous alcohol consumption. Disturbances during pregnancy can impact on developmental processes and result in increased risk of disease in later life. This project will examine the impact of perturbations such as maternal stress or alcohol consumption on the development of the placenta and fetal kidney. By gaining an understanding of how these organs are affected by prenatal insults, we are likely to be able to develop more effective intervention strategies to ensure all babies receive a healthy start to life.

This research program will investigate the potential for and impact of advanced tobacco control policies in reducing population smoking prevalence. In young adults the top 10 causes of burden of disease are dominated by mental and substance use disorders. I lead an international program of research in the combined areas of mental health & substance abuse, and am recognised as a leading international expert. My research aims to increase our understanding of drug & alcohol and mental disorders, prevent where possible and improve treatment responses.
