Robust Control of Electrostatic Microactuators. This proposal seeks to address a number of fundamental problems associated with electrostatic microactuators that form an integral part of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Performance of these microactuators is limited due to the presence of a specific form of nonlinearity in their dynamics. In this research advanced and innovative feedback controllers will be developed to improve operational performance of such microactuators. Performance of these microactuators is limited due to the presence of a specific form of nonlinearity in their dynamics. In this research advanced and innovative feedback controllers will be developed to improve operational performance of such microactuators. The global MEMS market is projected to increase from $10B in 2005 to $40B in 2015. This project will enhance Australia's standing in this important high-tech field.

Control systems theory provides principles and methods for design of complex engineering systems that automatically maintain desired performance despite changes in their environment (e.g. autopilot in an aircraft). This field is facing many new exciting challenges at the dawn of new millenium, such as design of complex engineering systems in possibly networked, asynchronous and distributed environments. The network will play a major role in addressing these challenges by providing a national research focus, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of people and ideas. By delivering a National Graduate School, the network will enhance learning conditions for graduate students. Moreover, it will provide an important catalyst between Australian universities and industry. This initiative will be essential in assessing the present state of control research in Australia and drafting a detailed plan for the network's leading research role in the future. Exact and hybrid algorithms for the Aircraft Landing Problem. This project aims to develop algorithms with superior guaranteed performance. Aircraft Landing Problems (ALP) are an important class of decision problems. Optimal solution of an ALP is applicable in transportation and health care delivery, benefitting systems experiencing long delays. This project aims to address several of the Australian Government's Science and Research Priorities, focusing on food supply chains, effective operation ....Exact and hybrid algorithms for the Aircraft Landing Problem. This project aims to develop algorithms with superior guaranteed performance. Aircraft Landing Problems (ALP) are an important class of decision problems. Optimal solution of an ALP is applicable in transportation and health care delivery, benefitting systems experiencing long delays. This project aims to address several of the Australian Government's Science and Research Priorities, focusing on food supply chains, effective operation and resource allocation in transport, and better models of health care delivery and services.Read moreRead less
