Elucidating the chemical and biophysical basis for the bioactivity of cyclotides: ultra-stable proteins from plants. The national/community benefits that are expected to arise from this research are economic and social in nature. In particular, this project has the potential to increase the national capacity for the development of peptides (mini-proteins) as anti-cancer drugs. The proposed technology can reduce herbicide usage by 80% (i.e. over $640 million p.a. saving) and improve crop yields by 30%. The controlled release of biologically active agents from host materials is a process that is used routinely in pharmaceuticals delivery but has received only limited attention in large-scale, low-cost areas such as the agrochemicals industry. Here we identify a number of rare tubular mineral phases as having great potential for low-cost controlled release. The Australian Plague Locust Commission is considering replacing an organophosphate pesticide with fipronil, a relatively new phenyl pyrazole pesticide, because it more specifically targets invertebrate animals. However, fipronil is more environmentally persistent, has high lipid solubility, is known to disrupt thyroid function and has wide variation in its toxicity to vertebra ....Evaluating the effects of fipronil, a moderately persistent new generation pesticide, on Australian native vertebrates. Massive quantities of chemical insecticides are used daily to control the insect pests that threaten agriculture, human health and the welfare of domestic pets. Insects readily evolve resistance to these chemicals reducing the effectiveness of pest control, increasing the amount of chemical used and increasing costs to consumers. Bacterial monooxygenases as new biocatalysts. Using enzymes for synthesis of new pharmaceuticals is of increasing importance. Monooxygenases are particularly interesting because of their capacity to perform chemically difficult reactions thus increasing potential to make new pharmaceuticals. We have shown that an enormous pool of diverse and novel monooxygenases exists in naturally occurring bacteria.
